Ideal for very simple but high-quality demanding home studios
Quechua, 02.05.2018
My home studio aim is to capture the full harmonic richness and dynamics of different acoustic instruments (strings, flutes and percussions) with the minimum possible equipment.

Most of the time I record in mono, with the rest of the cases using 2 channels in XY or MS stereo configurations. Many preamps are not really a must for me, but I'm quite demanding on preamp's dynamic range and warm analog-like sound.
I never use MIDI neither.

The Discrete 4 covers exactly my needs by offering few good preamps and musical AD/DA conversion with a reasonable price and in a compact ? rack unit size.

PROS:

Obtaining excellent quality recordings with this unit is easy and comfortable. The D4 delivers a very natural and detailed sound, and you can hit the preamps quite high as it is difficult to distort them even on fast transients.

During the performance you enjoy a trouble-less monitoring with zero-latency in your headphones (even when the on-board effects and the makeup Auraverb for monitoring are in use).
By the way, you can have different monitoring mixes on each of the 4 headphone outputs, perfect for my band during tracking without any additional external device like mixers or phone amplifiers.

The availability of lots of excellent plugins and simulations for free is the icing on the cake to obtain the sound I?m looking for in my pocket studio. The plugins provide me with everything I need for EQ or compression.

I also own 2 Verge small diaphragm microphones. The mic simulations are definitively a plus in respect to a simple equalization. The behavior of the microphone really changes and you can add interesting colors to the sound of acoustic instruments (cannot comment for the Edge large diaphragm mic).
Honestly, they sound better than my AKG 451B.

The construction is very solid and the connectors seem of very good quality. Zero problems so far after 4 months of regular use.

The control panel does not offer the full flexibility of other (and more expensive) Antelope units, but is simple and intuitive, and covers all the needs for recording, tracking, mixing and monitoring.
Zero problems too with the ASIO driver running through the USB port in my Samplitude DAW (cannot comment for the thunderbolt driver as my MOBO is not equipped for)

Last but not least, classy design and the iPhone app to control remotely the preamps and the headphones volume complete the positive overview.

CONS:

Out of the wide plugin offer, the D4 "basic" pack is limited to a maximum of 2 plugins for each of preamps 1 and 2. The cost to upgrade to 4 plugins on each of the 4 preamps and to have the possibility to use the build-in plugins in your own DAW via Thunderbolt is something to consider.

TAKE-AWAY:

For me this interface packs one of the best high-end audio features below the 900? barrier.
Ideal for very simple but high-quality demanding home studios.

UPDATE June 5th, 2018:

-A new collection of vintage preamp simulations as well as a tape machine emulation are now available too!!
-The price of the Premium Upgrade pack has been dropped from 700EU to 299EU!!!! that's awesome and really moves this interface to the front of the market, beyond anything else on this range of price.
