Spirit of 808 preserved and reinvented.

It is not 808 clone, it's a modern tribute you'll defintely enjoy if you always wanted real TR-808's features in hand but didn't want to pay antique exchange price for what it really is. There's no doubt It's brand new, it's analogue (it warms up), it has individual outs, it acts and sound like 808.
Since Roland's founder Ikutaro Kakehashi in 808 documentary explaind they stopped the producition of originals when run out of faulty voice chips responsible for unique cymabl sound... I'm not really sure how close current cymbal sound is to the original - as it was never the one I was paying most attention to. However kick, snare, rim, clap, toms, clave and cowbel have definitely got the character putting smile on everyone's face... or clean geometric shapes on your speaker cones. Solid build, large fromat, redesigned sequencer, redesinged voice access so you can access each voice instantly (yes, no selector wheel)... simply I can see a reason why not getting this while available at that price. I know if there's a chance you can remember the real tr-808, you may also remeber some older Behringer's products... but I reckon from now on, this genereation will be remembering Behringer for all those synths, and products like Wing mixers rather than anything else from the past, which I honestly wish Uli's and his company.

To me it's like a dream come true. I never thought that I would own an original 808, and TBH, besides the nostalgia factor, I'm not sure I'd want to to mess with an 40 year old machine, it's limitations and it's maintenance consts. So RD-8 for a 10th of the price was a no brainer.

The sounds identical with a few exceptions, but Behringer managed to enhance the control on some of them even more, which is awesome. Add to that, the HP/LP filter and the wave designer which acts -more or less- as a compressor, and you got a great box, that sounds like the OG on steroids! The cherry on top is the sequencer which is far more easy than the one of the original!

However not all is well. There's a big difference in the amplitude between the rimshot and claves. Switching between the two, means also changing the level which is very hard to do when performing live. I've also had an issue with the sequencer, playing at a slower tempo than the one shown, which was fixed by itself.

All in all I love the RD-8, but I wish they could fix the amplitude issue in a future firmware.

RD-8 is a fresh and affordable take on the classic 808 drum machine. It is true to the original analog sound and feels solid and sturdy, great for jamming and performances. The addition of a filter, wave designer, trigger repeat as well as a kick tuning knob elevates beat making to a whole new level. Having separate outputs for each instrument is also great. This way you can put compression on the kick, gated reverb on the snare, delay on the hats, you name it ...

Pros: Great value, true 808 sound, nice new features, solid feel,performance ready.

Cons:
1. Filter and Wave designer work only on the master output. If you use the individual instrument outputs, you lose that capability.
2. Lack of a proper manual. The Quick start guide feels unfinished and lacking.

If you want an 808, look no further!

I was one of the first to order this machine, I was very excited about it. The fact that they recreated this classic in such an awesome way, down to the build and the playability along with the sound! Upon arrival I tried a simple 4 on the floor kick drum pattern and realised that this is a special recreation, with the tuning capabilities. The room was shaking with that great kick drum sound, all the other sounds are spot on as well. The addition of the filter is genius for anyone wanting that old school sound but would like to add a little bit of a twist to them, I also like the sequencing of this machine and how everything feels in general. The addition of having bigger knobs is also great. I love the original but I always thought the knobs where too small, on this their perfect. Having individual outs is something every drum machine manufacturer should learn from.

I have only one big regret. My unit, being a very early one had a bit of a flaw and I have to return it back. I kind of knew this was going to happen because there was so much hype for this to be finished early and it did, regarding everything else their putting out. Something had to go wrong so I don't blame Behringer for this. Although I'm saddened that I'll have to send it back I know Thomann are very helpful and they always pull through! I know they'll send me a pristine replacement because I wouldn't want any other drum machine.
