Very good amp but not without it's flaws

AdamK95, 02.07.2018
After weeks of investigating modelling amps for bedroom use and small pub gigs, I was torn between the Fender GT40 and the Boss Katana 50, not to mention the Katana 50?s bigger brother the 100. In the end, based on all the glowing reviews for the Katana I went for that one, and I was blown away.

Delivery: The delivery was quick enough, it took around 5 days to get to Spain which is more than reasonable. It was well packaged and there was no significant damage on the box. The amp itself isn?t made with the best materials but I can attest to it being very tough having lugged it around for a couple of months now (dropping it from stairs, accidentally kicking and more).

Cons: They are very minor but cons nonetheless.
-Compared to other modelling amps (Like the Fender GT40 which has an Android and Apple app that connects via Bluetooth to the amp) it is quite a hassle to only be able to use the dedicated software (Boss Tone Studio) on the PC with a specific cable that you might not have lying around but is fairly easy to find in an electronics store (USB 2.0 A male to B male)
-The little stand to prop it up is more a gimmick than anything, it?s nice to have but it doesn?t lift it up merely enough to be useful and it is too easy to push it back down.
-The Boss Tone Studio isn?t updated very often so there aren?t as many official presets as in other amps like the Marshall Code, it does have the basic generic Metal, Blues, Hard Rock ones though.
- On 50 watt power the speaker is underpowered and distorts, but this wattage is overkill for anything other than a very big pub. If you?re playing for around 30 to 50 people you?re fine.
- This is nitpicking and I knew from the beginning what I was getting but a presence knob and four channels both of which are features on all other Katanas, would have been nice (the 50 has two channels, although with an update they doubled them by holding the PANEL button to change banks)
-You can only use three effects at a time which is perfect for me as I like to keep it fairly simple but may not be for others.

Pros: This amp is definitely mostly pros and very good reason.
-First and foremost is the sound, it is very easy to get a usable to tone out of the box without even using the dedicated program, I didn?t use until a month later because I was already very satisfied.
-The program itself is very in depth and you can spend hours fine tuning that perfect tone you wanted, often I?ll find one that I like more than what I originally had planned. Because the program has all of Boss?s pedals you can get away with Jazz tones, Blues, Metal, and anything in between. It is also very easy to install using Windows 10, I have no experience with it on a Mac.
-The feel. It responds almost like a valve amp, in the sense that the tone you get really depends a lot on your fingers, unlike many other modelling amps. How hard you pick, how low you have the volume on the guitar it all has a very real effect, and it makes you want to play better if that makes sense.
- The speaker is good for low to mid volumes, you?re not getting Motorhead level volumes here but most people probably won?t find themselves in a situation like that. It has very good definition, you can hear all strings ringing out even on high gain.
-This is a dealbreaker for me: It has an Acoustic amp setting that?s not a simulator but a proper amp, I advise using this only on the PANEL setting though so you know exactly what?s going on, the smallest thing can ruin an acoustic tone.
-Recording out of it is very easy as it has its USB port in the back, speaking about ports it also has an aux in port to play backing tracks from my phone or PC.

Conclusion: I am overall a very happy customer and hope this amp last as long as possible. In any case at 200 euros I couldn't go wrong with it. Most of my friends who are also musicians are astonished at the amount of features it has but also because of the sound. A lot of these cheaper amps focus a bit too much on features only to have a not so great sound, not in this case though, well done Boss!

A Lot of Amplifier for Not Much Money

GraemeSPa, 07.12.2017
After seeing so many positive on line reviews about this amp, I had no problems in joining the Katana owner's club. I have used 50 watt valve 2x12 combos for years but I have aged to a point where lugging one around is getting difficult. This little Katana has every feature I need in a gigging amplifier - it can go from acoustic to AC/DC and has all the effects I need. I can go minimalist now - my acoustic, my Strat and my amp - and I can get every sound on my setlist. The new version 2 software doubles up the saved channel features and access to the huge range of digital Boss is like the kid in the candy shop being handed the keys to the front door. The 12" speaker moves a lot more air than other small amps and 50 watts is way loud enough for my needs. The ability to switch down to half power and practice power without losing tone is a great feature to. The dual function effects knobs are unusual, but you can set up the required effects and store them as a channel patch. ...and it is so light to carry around!
I've owned Marshall & Blackstar 2x12 combos - both great amplifiers but they cannot compete with the sound to weight ratio of the Katana. This is the lightest and most versatile amplifier I have owned - and for under 200 euros, you get a lot of amplifier for your money.
