Enduring love
Blickfanger, 21.12.2010
This is the one microphone that I always want to use whenever possible. (I purchased a second one after falling in love with the first.) It is a superb product in every way, from the aluminium suitcase, to the Vovox cabling, to the power unit, to the microphone itself. I have never heard a more quiet mic, while it has an unbelievable ability to pick up soft and subtle sounds. It almost sounds as if a very good optocompressor was used. A theoretical one, with no noise! This makes it excellent for voice work, but also for foley studio recording for movies and to record room ambiences. Voice recordings will cut through the mix on one side, but they will be very warm at the same time, with great although well-defined lows and fantastic silky representation in the highs. A true tube sound, but again: without any perceivable noise.

This mic is so extremely sensitive that for some people it may be too much of mic goodness. Think of a speaker with false teeth. This mic will let you hear it loud and clear. Is your recording room not well isolated? You will hear the traffic 5 kilometres away from the house. An AKG C414 might be a better choice under such circumstances, because it is far less sensitive than this baby. (Well, it's a totally different mic in many other ways of course, but just to give you some indication.)

I find that the Valvet X performs best with a neutral solid state amplifier, with low noise. The (very modern) tube sound is already there and who wants distortion anyway? I use it a lot with LAKE PEOPLE MIC-AMP F355 CLASS A FRONTEND or the built in high quality preamps of Sound Devices 788T-SSD recorder. If I had the money I would perhaps pair it to the Schoeps VSR5 Mic Preamp, or a Grace Design m201. Recently I had to send a recording that I made from a great voice actor to a big voice-over studio. These people were absolutely stunned about the results and wondered how I had processed the sound to make it that beautiful. It was just a straight recording from the actor in the sound booth with the Valvet X into the SD 788T-SSD...

The shockmount is also very nice to the eye, but it is somewhat less effective, so I use this mic with the RYCOTE UNIVERSAL STUDIO MOUNT USM-L, which is simply the best shockmount I have ever used. It works perfectly with the Valvet X.

Just to put in perspective how much I love this mic: if I had to save only one mic of my pretty large collection of high-end microphones (that includes a vast array of fantastic Schoeps mics) it would be this one.

Nach vier Jahren?
18.12.2014

Love it.

Ein wirklich grandioses Mikrofon! Aber...
Georgi K., 14.04.2011
