Small Japanese wonder box
whitewolfmusic, 15.11.2015
I have searched for a suitable USB DAC for my Shure SRH-1840, to be independent of hard-wired sound cards and to use the potential of the headphones also mobile fully.

Although the HP-A3 is already a somewhat older device and has more expensive successors and alternatives, I decided after some research but for this. Especially because the HP-A4 was a "more neutral" sound, which would be for me with a already super-neutral headphones would not be an advantage and would end up in a thin, digital-snappy sound.

The Fostex HP-A3 is impressively well and robustly processed, in a time of cost-optimized disposable products it is a feast for the eyes. Perfect gap size and surface, pleasantly heavy and valuable in the hand. Pictures and videos of the inner life on the net also show an exemplary degree of precision. The HP-A3 is one of the devices that are still manufactured in Japan itself, you notice it.
The supplied adhesive pads are, of course, a small saving measure, which is easy to forgive at the price. You should attach them very carefully, because they can not really be solved again. ;)

The operation is self-explanatory, there is a point deduction for the somewhat strange design of the two mode buttons on the front and their slightly unintuitive inscription. Had not anticipated the anticipation at the first test and did not care, and wondered that the device remained silent.

The most important thing is the sound, and with that I am completely happy. All frequencies are powerful and have punch, nothing is missing, bites or is overburdened. No noise, no noise. The built-in DAC has a great spatial sound and separates the individual instruments so well that you can listen to every detail of an instrument if you simply pay attention. In short, the part sounds great and is worth every penny. I have DACs for 1000? Heard worse.

A thick bonus point is still available for me for the uncomplicated Linux compatibility out of the box.

Please consider one thing before purchase: High-impedance headphones should be able to overwrite the small USB-powered box after what I have read so.

Otherwise: Absolute Kaufempfehlung!
