Useful plug in but not so realistic
GUI could be better, sound it's good enough, but not so realistic as you can imagine though. Very useful when you need some jazzy action in your projects . CPU friendly

Sound for specialists
Eckehard, 31.10.2009
I bought Garritan Jazz & Big Band (GJBB) mainly because I liked the saxophones on the demotracks in comparison to other sampler products, the rest was rather a welcome addition (another piano, additional winds, acoustic bass, one more Percussion set.

The winds are all controllable via aftertouch and the modwheel, aftertouch gives the vibrato (grouch) and the modwheel some getting used to the volume. For a pianist this is unusual, but somehow for a windmill after "stop" of the sound also later the volume can be varied. The description of the possibilities in the manual is very well documented, but a lack of wind training can not replace it.

The hope to give me half-tidy saxophone voices in my multitrack sampler compositions (jazz) or even live (rock / pop) has so far failed. Perhaps that is also too much demanded that an unskilled windmill, that is, a pianist, once just played just authentic Sax sound on the keyboard. For me, it always sounded like a car horn.

In rock / pop live situations, I always use wind instruments (also with winds from GJBB) because in the set the original faithful reproduction of a single instrument is not so important. In the multitrack / sequencer projects I do not use any blues anymore, only small fills or far in the background, more than area sound, they are still used.

Anyway, the sound is still very good, everything that should be influenced during the sound (wind instruments, strings, bass, Voices) sounds rather modest, at least not natural. For more impressive surfaces for Livesounds, synths and FM8 strings are becoming more and more important, then it is clear to everyone that it is not something to be imitated, it is a sound of their own.

The whole thing should not however the sample quality to lessen, which is consistently good and as the title promises jazzig tuned. I find the piano a little forceless, here I like the Steinway already delivered in Native contact already better and even more the Steinway and Bechstein from Native Akoustikpiano are better. I like the acoustic contrabass very well, because you can produce beautiful and warm accompaniment groups to jazz standards (from the perspective of a pianist, am not a skilled bassist). The drums also have broom sounds.

With the latest updates is now also the user interface quite native contact player. The GJBB is particularly well integrated in contact 3, in contact 3, GJBB looks exactly like the other NI products in the Explorer, that is, a quick and clear sound selection is possible and I therefore only use GJBB from contact 3.

If you do not want to rely on the database functions of your host but want to sort the whole thing on hard disks already clean, let's say that the GJBB sounds are packaged in a large file and encrypted on disk, the Vibraphonsound alone in another directory Not.

Garritan has released several free updates since my purchase, which I consider to be very customer-friendly.

Overall, certainly not a bad product, for my special expectations I got only partial real additional benefits at a relatively high cost. So look closely at what is really needed. From the price-performance ratio I see the NI products Kontak, B4, Akoustikpiano, Elektrik Piano better placed, the FM8 and bandstand approximately the same.
