Gretsch G9500 Ltd Edition Jim Dandy

I bought this little guitar so that I wouldn't have to bring my nicer acoustic to camps and festivals and such. This does the job perfectly well, especially for its price. It's not the most amazing guitar you've ever seen, but it doesn't have any flaws that would make playing it irritating.

Sound:
Quite boxy and midrange-y, but not toy-ish or cheap. Not a lot of sustain, but it's not supposed to have. This isn't a dreagnought so don't expect it to sound like one. It's got its own thing and I like it. Very rustic.
There's a reason why small guitars were made into the parlor style shape back in the day - instead of just making a small dreadnought, like many mini/travel guitars are made today. Parlor sounds way better.

Playability:
Neck is nice, nothing special there, nothing bad either. The satin finish feels very nice. Fret ends are not sharp.
The nicest thing about this guitar is the size. It's really small, even smaller than a 3/4 size classical guitar. The neck joint is at the 12th fret, which is typical for a traditional parlor guitar. It restricts the access from 10th fret up quite a lot, but the upside is that the neck is short. That makes this a perfect travel or couch guitar.

Setup and build quality:
I needed to tweak the action a little bit, but that's to be expected from any guitar when it travels around the world. It was very easy and the guitar came with an hex key.
Other than that, no setup or build quality issues. Tuners feel really solid and I really like the way they look. Very vintage.
I also really like the bridge design, that is a simple top loader instead of having those pins that all other acoustics have.

All in all, this is a perfectly decent guitar that won't perform miracles, but doesn't cost much and will give you exactly what you need, if you're looking either for a couch guitar, travel guitar or an authentic blues box. If you're not expecting a deep and full sound or good upper fret access, you will be very happy with this.

NOTE! there is no upper strap button nor has it been drilled for, so you're gonna have to do that yourself.

I'm mainly an electric guy, and this is my first time owning or even playing a parlor-scale acoustic guitar. It just arrived yesterday so I haven't played it a whole lot yet, but first impressions are very good.

It has a nice bright sound, quite resonant, moreso than I was expecting given the size.

Some reviews I'd read said that the guitar required a bit of set-up out of the box, but apart from tuning up, mine came all ready to go. I didn't need to file any sharp frets or make adjustments to anything else.

The action is nice and comfortable, as with many acoustics it tends to get a bit higher the farther up the neck you go, but not by much, so it's still very playable. I may see if I can lower it a bit, not because the guitar requires it, it is quite playable as is, but I think I could get it a small bit lower and that might make playing up the neck little more in-step with the lower end, but like I said, it's not necessary, so we'll see. Given the scale, and the lack of cut-away, there is no real way of playing past the 12th fret anyway.

So in summation, this is a fun little guitar, easy to play, sounds nice, and feels very well put together for something of this price. Light and compact but sturdy. I would definitely recommend to beginners, or experienced players looking for something to noodle with on the couch or bring to the beach etc.

In unregelmäßigen Abständen lässt eine Gitarre die Birne weich werden und die Vernunft verschwindet auf unbestimmte Zeit im Untergrund. So auch hier. Lange, sehr sehr lange konnte ich der Jim Dandy widerstehen. Immer wieder angeschaut in den letzten Jahren, die Bewertungen durch gelesen. Dann den Wunsch zu kaufen immer wieder zur Seite geschoben.

Bis nun vor ein paar Wochen diese nocturneblaue Version (wow!) zum Kaufen bereit stand. Nein, ich brauche sie wirklich nicht. Ich habe andere Gitarren zum Spielen. Aber irgendwie hat sie etwas.

Nochmals hin und her überlegt und dann doch bestellt. Wenn sie sich als gar zu schrecklich heraus stellen sollte, könnte ich sie zurück schicken, so mein Plan.
Sie kam sehr gut verpackt bei mir an. Sogar die Saiten sind mit Korrosionschutzpapier eingeschlagen.
Laut Zettel im Inneren ist sie in Indonesien hergestellt worden.

Die Verarbeitung ist sehr gut, was mich positiv überrascht hat. Die Bünde sind ordentlich abgerundet, keine scharfen Kanten. Der Lack ist makellos.
Das Binding ist echt. Alle sonstigen Verzierungen sind einwandfrei aufgemalt.
Durch ihr kleines Format und die kurze Mensur ist die Jim Dandy herrlich handlich.

Das Nocturneblau entpuppte sich im Original als ein dunkles Blau mit einem Stich ins Grüne. Deutlich weniger grün, als mir das mein Bildschirm vorgegaukelt hat.

Die Mechaniken sind einfacher Bauart, was bei diesem Preis aber auch nicht anders erwartet werden kann. Nichtdestotrotz funktionieren sie einwandfrei und die Gitarre ist stimmstabil.

Negativ ist mir aufgefallen, dass die Saiten ziemlich hoch aus dem Sattel heraus kommen. Das erschwert das Greifen in den ersten Bünden, was für einen Anfänger sicherlich nicht so schön ist. Dies lässt sich durch eine fachkundige Person zwar ändern, bedeutet aber zusätzlichen Aufwand.

Und nun zum Klang. Der ist, wie es sich für gut abgehangenes Sperrholz gehört , einfach "boxy" kistenartig. Lautstärke, fette Bässe und glitzernde Höhen gibt es hier nicht. Alles schön mittig, gleichmäßig verteilt. Willig macht sie Strumming und Fingerpicking mit.
Unwillkürlich zieht mich diese Gitarre zum Delta-Blues hin und hier ist es dann einfach nur noch eine Freude sie zu spielen. Genau der Sound den ich bei dieser Art von Musik haben möchte.

Richtig spannend wird es mit dem Deltoluxe Tonabnehmer, den es extra zu kaufen gibt. Herrlich Raum zum Experimentieren und kreativ sein, ob verzerrt oder clean. Hier ist dann an Lautstärke und Bass kein Mangel mehr.
Fazit: Sie bleibt, mit tiefer gelegten Saiten, für besondere Stunden, in denen meine Musik nicht brilliant klingen soll. In der Zeit dazwischen ist sie einfach hübsch anzuschauen.
