An offset classic with a modern twist

Electric Guitar Harley Benton JA-60CC Dakota Red front view

The Harley Benton JA-60CC, shown here in its Dakota Red finish, is aimed at guitarists who are in search of a true legend at an affordable price. This guitar features an offset-style basswood body and a roasted maple neck with a slim C profile and 21-fret laurel fingerboard that ensures a comfortable playing feel, and it comes loaded with a pair of Roswell single coil pickups that provide a full sound even in the bridge position. The combination of a classic early 60s-style finish and chrome hardware (complete with Kluson-style machine heads and a Tune-o-Matic bridge and stop-bar tailpiece) also ensures that it has the looks to match its distinctive and characteristic sound.

Perfect for Indie and Co.

The Harley Benton JA-60CC pays tribute to some of the classic guitars of the past and, while it will capably handle Jazz, will feel most at home in Indie and Alternative music. Its simple yet effective circuitry includes a three-way toggle switch for pickup selection as well as master volume and tone controls to allow guitarists to adjust the sound according to their personal preferences, and both the conveniently placed controls and the two Roswell pickups are installed on a cream-coloured pickguard that covers about half of the guitar’s top. Speaking of the pickups: Despite their similar appearance, these are not P90s but rather “conventional” single coils, albeit with wider, flatter windings that provide a richer and deeper sound than their taller, narrower counterparts. The fixed bridge and the reliable machine heads that adorn the natural-finish headstock in turn ensure reliable tuning stability.

Alternative sounds on a budget

Fans of Alternative or Surf music who have to get by on a small budget will certainly appreciate the Harley Benton JA-60CC’s affordable price. The guitar offers a great sound for Indie music thanks to its particularly flat, wide single coils, while the offset body’s deep cutaways mean that its impressive playing comfort does not end at the 12th fret. The JA-60CC’s excellent build quality can rival that of more high-priced instruments, so players can rest assured that they have made a solid investment and can enjoy the instrument for many years to come. And alongside the guitar’s distinctive sound, the authentic 1960s Dakota Red finish will also make it a guaranteed eyecatcher both at home and on stage.

About Harley Benton

Since 1998, the Harley Benton brand has been catering for the needs of numerous guitarists and bassists. In addition to an extensive range of stringed instruments, Thomann's house brand also offers a wide choice of amplifiers, speakers, effect pedals, and other accessories. In total, the range includes over 1,500 products. Built by established names in the industry, all Harley Benton products combine quality and reliability at attractive and affordable prices. The continuous expansion of the range ensures that Harley Benton always provides new, exciting, and innovative products that keep players perfectly in tune with the musical world, day after day.

Balance and versatility

Thanks to its clear and punchy sound, the JA-60CC can be used for a wide variety of musical genres. It will feel especially at home in Alternative, Indie, and Surf Rock music, where its two Roswell single coils will deliver clean sounds with plenty of low end as well as dynamic overdriven tones. The guitar’s sonic palette is complemented by the well-balanced offset body and familiar comfortable playing feel, both of which will facilitate a successful performance in the rehearsal room and, most importantly, on stage. Needless to say, the JA-60CC will sound best when combined with an appropriate amplifier – and of course Harley Benton also offers a range of high-quality amps at very fair prices, so it is also well worth checking out Thomann’s attractive bundle offers!

I have two guitars like this and I am probably going to buy more. I saw a lot of guitars in all price categories, but this one is just great in terms of its build quality and features, and especially given its more than affordable price. The only possible criticism is related to the pickups: the sound is just a little bit thin to my taste, but still pretty decent anyway.
A special remark should be made about the baked maple neck--its colour is really pleasantly brown, unlike some less appealing instances that I saw on other guitars, including a Mexican Tele by Fender.
A funny "feature" of this guitar comes to mind. When I first got it, I immediately removed the thin protective film from the pickguard, and was somewhat unpleasantly surprised by the low quality of its plastic--extremely soft and dull-looking. It was only about two weeks later that I realized that the pickguard was in fact proteced by yet another layer of a really solid plastic film. ;) Having removed the second one too, I enjoyed the look and feel of a perfecly nice pickguiard.
All in all, the guitar is highly recommended, particularly to those who are on a budget and who do not require too much distorted/overdriven sounds.

A very good Jazzmaster-style guitar (but a bit expensive)...
Anthony_79 29.11.2022
I was never a fan of offset guitars, but I had been eyeing these JA-60s for a while.. I was going for the kit version, but it would be out of stock for months, so I had to satisfy my GAS, and when the custom colours where announced, it was time to pull the trigger...

It is a very good guitar. It has a distinctly different single coil sound, compared to, say, an HB Tele or St model. It is a very worthwhile addition to any collection and a guitar I like very much, due to its vintage sounding pickups. I find myself picking it up very often, perhaps its my current favorite.

I quite like the bright red colour. The finish overall is very good, mine only had a small, very small ding/mark on one fret, but, honestly, nothing too serious.

The neck is the best feature of the guitar (together with the pickups). I am comparing it to my HB ST-62 Inca Silver, possible my second most comfortable, and my Harley Benton ST-62 (and other HB Teles). It's very smooth and comfortable, it invites you to play endlessly.

The guitar is also very light - perhaps too light. I usually don't use a strap while playing in a sitting position, but in this case I will have to - the guitar is slipping on my legs. It must be below 3 kg, or thereabout..

Overall, this guitar is highly recommended. However, I wish it wasn't so expensive - although I bought it, I can't justify the extra 20 euros for a, so called, custom colour. Nothing "custom" about a red color which is used in so many other "custom" color HB guitars. Also, this guitar should not be more expensive than an ST-62, which has 3 pickups and is more versatile, with the same quality finish and colors. I assume Harley Benton will soon rectify that price issue.

Overall, as I said, a very good guitar. Highly recommended.

“you get what you pay for”—no, you get much more.

everything about the guitar is great—it feels good, plays well, and looks amazing. the colors look exactly as they do in the pictures. the quality of everything feels surprisingly high, except for the switch, which feels just a bit flimsy compared to everything else. but it works and it looks good so who really cares. ready to play right out of the box. phenomenal guitar for the price.
