A truely flexible and professional way to record audio.

Whilst other options are available to connect a fixed mic to ios devices this is a very different idea altogether. The iRig pre allows the connection of any XLR microphone to just about any ios device, even ghost power is available should your favorite mic require it. The unit runs from a 9v pp3 type battery and has a control on the side to adjust the amount gain provided to suit the material being recorded. I was looking to do some field recording with an eye to using natural sounds in Ableton Live 9. I looked at conventional field recorders but then came across this device in an internet article. As I already had an out of contract iPhone 3gs, this together with its matching software looked like an interesting idea. The combination works beautifully and has allowed me to record some great ambient sounds for mangling in live.

This a very simple device to use but provides a really professional result.

Very good mic interface for my DSLR

This small unit is the part of my DSLR video rig for couple of years.
From time to time I plug my Rode NTG 3 shotgun mic straight into IRig that is connected to DSLR.
It is light and small, so this set fits and looks good on microphones shock absorber.
The only thing I needed to add was the TRRS female to TRS male minijack adapter.
The tiny hiss noise is notisable, but you will not notise it in normal sound inverement.All in all: IRig pre is nice tool for event video recording.

Nice portable pre-amp

Device works perfect with iOS devices and makes sense for portable sound recording with better than internal phone microphones.
At the same time device is widely used in movie industry as a portable and very cheap preamp for DSLR camera. Unfortunately in that case it doesn't work out of the box and some DIY improvement required (search for youtube mods).
I would like to have just a bit more gain from the output, however in general device is pretty good for its price.

Cheap and cheerful

It does exactly what it's supposed to for very little money. For my purposes it is a great help that the iRig Pre plugs into and works with pretty much any mobile device, rather than just apple devices like so many other options on the market. Both the sound quality and build quality are about as good as you'd expect from a product at this price. The only thing I wish it had was some form of metering on the device itself, even just a little 'peak' light, since if the device gets used with software that lacks onscreen metering it can be hard to set the mic gain.
