At this price point: Excellent!!!

TrEr, 08.02.2018
Short version:

Excellent if you are looking for super cheap active monitors for a home setup and don't need a lot of low frequency extension.

Long version:

I got these for a home recording setup where I mainly edit projects that I bring home from my studio and sometimes do simple overdubs. For this purpose they are excellent.

I do most of my mixing in my studio so I did not get these monitors for critical listening. I would probably have gotten better (and far more expensive) monitors if I expected to do a lot of mixing on them. They are a bit lacking in the lows compared to larger, more expensive models so balancing the lows would involve a bit of guesswork. If I was forced to mix on them I would at least make sure to have a pair of high end headphones available to check the mix.

Having said that, they are quite impressive for the size/price and seem to work very well in my home environment (rather than in an acoustically treated studio environment). They have excellent clarity and apart from the slightly lacking lows (which are expected at this price/size) I actually think they sound great!

Build quality is as expected at this price point. A bit plasticky and cheap. On one of mine the front panel doesn't line up perfectly with the main cabinet so it looks a bit rough. It works fine though.

The back panel has both XLR and TRS inputs, a +4dbu/-10dbV switch and some basic HF/LF adjustments. Very sufficient for most home setups. In some situations it would probably have been more conveient to have the volume knobs on the front but I don't really mess around with them too much so for me it's fine.

It could be worth mentioning that both of mine came with some small white spots on the speaker elements and dust cap. It looks like tiny styrofoam particles (or possible paint spray) that had sticked to the surface. Most of them could be brushed off but some of them are sticking so tighly that I would probably damage the elements before I got them off. Both monitors were sealed in plastic bags so it can't be from the packing materials. It must have happened at the factory. Probably not the best quality control and a bit disappointing. It does not seem to affect the sound though and Thomann gave me a small discount for this. Not a big deal to me but they look a bit messy up close.

Conclusion:

These monitors compare very favourably to others I've tried in this price range. For my specific needs I'm very happy with them but if you want excellent low frequency extension or classy looks you should probably save up for something better.

Impressive for the price

hfloor, 28.12.2017
The speakers actually look much better than shown in pictures around the internet. Built quality is great too.
Tremble/bass can be controlled to match the room/position/distance from walls etc. Which is very useful and works well.
I suppose that most users would either leave these controls to 0 or use them to reduce bass and tremble. The boost function, especially in the tremble, seems a bit useless to me as the speakers are quite bright.
The sound stage is big and deep and stereo imaging is impressive.
It seems that the jbl "waveguide" feature really makes a difference.
The only bad thing is that they are a little noisy. There is a constant hiss which is not affected by the volume control. So the lower the volume setting, the more obvious the hiss. This is not a problem when music is playing though. It is noticeable only in a silent room when sitting <1.5m from the speakers. (The level of the noise is comparable to a laptop fan). i think that this is acceptable.
The overall value for money ratio is really high.
So definitely recommended!
