A characterful oscillator and filter for this price?
28.10.2016
I got this as an extra synth 'voice' to go with my computer/modular and midi gear. I have an O.G. FAT FreeBass 383 from back in the day that I modded and it sounds like a monster. So I was delighted to see this make a comeback and it has to be the cutest little desktop synth ever! I also have a BassStation rack, BS2 keyboard, Cyclone TT303, DinSync 303 Euro module and a modded x0xb0x. So I kind of do like 'that' sound.

There are no bells and whistles - you get a nice 'Autotune' VCO, VCF, VCA, midi in and filter in. No its not a TB nor would I want it to be. It can get close to that kind of sound but I think it has a character of its own. As it is analogue, only midi note and accent are available to send to it so of course no automation. But here is the thing - it is more fun playing with the knobs and recording the audio performance! This little guy likes being tweaked and you will enjoy doing just that!

Its so straight forward and quick to use (once hooked up to a suitable sequencer) I often find myself reaching for it rather than the TT303/BassStation 2. You really do get a great sound for not a lot of money. I'll probably pick up another soon.

So cool/so cute!
Cons - Its not a TB303!
Pros - Its not a TB303! It can do that fairly convincingly but being able to set the mix of waveforms gives it a lovely character all of its own, its so small and portable it should be on every desktop and it really is hands-on. You have to tweak it live and when you do you find yourself enjoying tweaking it live!

Great!
Spaceflight, 08.10.2019
This is the best bang for the buck. Everytime I play people ask me "what makes that 303 sound" and I point at my beloved MAM MB33. It works great and has massive low end. I actually use it as a bass-line without a sub in my live-act acid project.
Resonance and envelopes are spot on, allow to craft massive acid lines. I use Electribe2 as a sequencer and it feels right.
What I miss is LFO on cutoff or option to plug in a CV for it.
Knobs are very soft, I am not sure if this is lack of quality or adjustment for longevity during live performances.

+++ Massive value for money.
- Needs constant attention during performance due to lack of cv or midi cc support (you need to constantly change the parameters to preserve 303 feel, just like the original - good for one bad for others, for me... tiny bit on a bad side.)

MAM Pocket Rocket
Mowby One, 26.11.2019
I bought this as I need "The" sound as cheap as possible,
Watched a few demos and was impressed, bought it and as soon
As I connected it up I started smiling,
It's a superb alternative to the £2000 Tb303,
Slam it through an overdrive pedal and a whole new bunch
Of sweet spots open up,
Sounds great without one but I use an overdrive when
Needed,
It's easily small enough to pop in your pocket,
It's made if metal,
Genuinely gives big sounds for the money ,
NO built in sequencer ,
I can't fault it at all, 5*

Banging acid box
Stompp, 10.09.2020
The MB33 is a bundle of squelchy joy. It sounds absolutely great, thick oscillators, the resonance is super fluid, if you push up the output level it'll drive the signal so you don't even need to run it through a pedal or clip your mixer's inputs if you want that raw acid-techno grunge (though it sounds great that way too). Does it sound exactly 100% like a real 303? Well, no, but nobody has ever come up to me and said "hey, I could tell that acid line in your track wasn't a real 303 and it totally ruined it for me!" If you're familiar with 303 sequencing you can happily get the right feel with any sequencer. It'd have been nice to add a bit more control, maybe MIDI CC for the filter for instance, as it is it can receive note inputs and maxing out the velocity will trigger the accent but that's it. For the price it feels very well put together. Personally I'd have preferred some slightly nicer knobs, these ones feel a tad cheap, bu then, it's a budget unit so that's entirely fair. The final word - I love this little synth so much I bought two so I can have my own little ReBirth-esque acid jams. Excellent stuff.
