Powerful all-tube combo amp

The Marshall DSL40 CR Cream Levant LTD boasts two channels, each with two different voicings. The sound of Channel 1 ranges from clean to crunch, while Channel 2 has two different overdrive options which provide a wide spectrum of distorted sounds. The amp is equipped with many useful extra features, including an emulated line out for direct recording, an audio input for playing back music from external sources, on-board digital reverb, and an effects loop which allows additional effects to be integrated. The three-band EQ has been upgraded to enhance its effectiveness, while the Tone Shift switch allows modern scooped sounds to be dialled in. Extra signal processing options are provided by the Presence and Resonance controls, which further shape the sound of the 40-watt power stage and its two EL34s. The result is clearly audible through the 12-inch Celestion V-Type speaker, which delivers outstanding definition and presence throughout the entire sound spectrum.

Genuine Marshall sound and more

The preamp stage of the Marshall DSL40 CR Cream Levant LTD is equipped with four ECC83 tubes and its two channels can be selected either via the front panel, the footswitch that comes included, or MIDI. The sound of Channel 1 (Classic Gain) ranges from shimmering clean through to a pleasantly dynamic breakup, while Channel 2 (Ultra Gain) covers everything from sizzling crunch to high-gain lead. Both channels have their own volume and master volume controls and share an effective three-band EQ, while the Presence and Resonance controls allow precise shaping of the power stage’s tonal response. The on-board reverb is also independently adjustable for each channel. In addition to the effects loop, the MIDI connection, audio input, and footswitch connection, the DSL40CR also features an Emulated Out. Last but not least, five speaker outputs are present which allow various combinations of 4, 8, and 16-Ohm speaker cabinets to be connected – should you require that extra power boost.

A no-compromise Marshall combo

If you love the real Marshall sound, you will definitely love the Marshall DSL40 CR Cream Levant LTD. This stalwart combo delivers Marshall’s classic all-tube sound and is equally suited to the rehearsal room, the stage, or the recording studio. The amp’s output power can be reduced from 40 to 20 watts and can thus be adapted to many applications, while its extensive features, such as the two channels with four different voicing options, high-quality digital reverb, effects loop, and cab-emulating direct/headphone output, make the Marshall DSL40CR a go-to amp for any guitarist looking for an extremely flexible, versatile, and powerful tube combo. This limited edition creme white amp might also be an interesting choice for collectors.

About Marshall

Marshall, the manufacturer from Milton Keynes in Great Britain, is an indispensable figure in the world of electric guitar. The tube amplifiers of company founder Jim Marshall († 2012) have been writing Rock music history since 1962 with names like Pete Townshend, Jimi Hendrix, and Eric Clapton. The classics of the JTM, JMP, and JCM 800 series are still highly sought-after today, as they shaped the sound of overdriven and distorted electric guitar more than any other product. To this day, the combination of the amp and 4x12" cabinet - the "Marshall stack" - is synonymous with the energy and power of the Rock music genre. Alongside these landmark achievements, however, Marshall has always kept its finger on the pulse of the times and a close eye on the needs of up-and-coming musicians.

Versatile Marshall sounds

With its 40-watt power stage and 12-inch Celestion speaker, the Marshall DSL40 CR Cream Levant LTD can be used at home, in the rehearsal room, on stage, and above all as a hassle-free recording companion in the studio. Its Emulated Out features cab simulation developed by the specialists at Softube which allows the full dynamic range of the classic Marshall sound to be captured on computer without the need for complex miking.

Marshall...as if it was ever in doubt!

Having been a gigging guitarist for over 30yrs I have had my fair share of amps. I have tried solid state, valve and hybrids but there is no getting past a pure valve amp....especially when it is a Marshall!!

Having most recently been using a TSL601 I wanted something a bit smaller but with equal punch. I bought a second hand DSL and I loved the tones but it was in bad shape so decided to invest in a brand new amp. And boy what a great package this is!!

Delivery was prompt and on time (all taxes paid up front). Out of the first box first came the pedal. With six foot switches I could activate all four channels independently (Clean, Crunch, OD1 and OD2), switch between Master 1 & 2 and turn the effects loop on/off. Also in the first box was an amp cover, made out of high quality canvas that fits perfectly.

Box 2 was the money shot. The Limited Edition Cream Levant DSL40CR is a thing of beauty. No doubt the black Marshalls are the iconic colour but this is something else. The vintage Marshall badge on the beige coloured cloth looks stunning! Surrounded by a cream tolex covering it sure is something special aesthetically alone!

But what we are really here for is the sounds! There are 4 channels that selectable - 2 x Classic Gain, 2 x Ultra Gain. In the classic gain section you get Clean and Crunch. The clean channel is great for simple rhythm or for clean lead sounds. The Crunch starts to get in to the classic Marshall sound, winding up the gain putting you in that classic rock tone that everybody loves!

The Ultra Gain OD1 really piles on that heavy classic rock tone but is so versatile, just backing off the volume on your guitar gets a nice shimmering clean sound with just a bit of bite. OD2 is metal heaven! A slightly thicker, more gainy type of sound, perfect for those thrash metal tones.

There is a 3 band EQ which, to be honest, I thought would be a hinderance...it isn't! It almost sounds like it is adding a tiny bit of compression and really brings a tightness to the overall sound. Combine that with the Presence and Resonance and you have a complete tonal palette that will satisfy most peoples needs.

Now, I use this amp in a rock covers band and we play all sorts of stuff. I use my BOSS ME80 in the Effects Loop section and only use the modulations and reverbs/delays that I need. All my tones come from the amp channels. Using Master 1 to set the volume for my rhythm and Master 2 to add volume for my lead sound . I do find the clean channel to be a bit quieter than the crunch, OD1 and OD2 but I counter that by using the Master 2 to boost the volume as I do not play any purely clean lead lines.

The EQ section was my biggest concern being that is was a generic EQ for all channels as opposed to independently but this was unfounded. This amp is simply outstanding! I have now gigged it 3 times and had no problems accessing the sounds I want and/or need and at the volume I want it to be at. I have not had the Master 1 volume beyond 4 on the 40w setting, setting the Master 2 level to 6 for my lead sounds.

I could wax lyrical about this amp all day long but the best thing you could do is try one for yourself, you definitely will not be disappointed

Good tube amp.
Andreii 16.09.2022
I like the amp so far, granted I had it only for a few days. The sound is very good, the speaker does it’s job, the 2 way footswitch is acceptable and the amp knobs are responsive. I persoanlly think the reverb is ok even if it is digital. I only gave it 4 stars because the first unit was not working but Thomann changed it for a new one.
