The amp maker from California also builds pedals. These are all highly interesting, and there is no need to discuss Mesa Engineering's processing and quality. But what can their pedals do, and what makes them different?

The Grid Slammer, after the Throttle Box, is the most evil of the Mesa Boogie pedals. There is enough gain for almost anything, but the mids are clearly in the range of classic rock sounds: harmonic overdrive in all variations! The tone control can be used to tame the treble, from light crunch to classic rock sound, an immense variety of high quality sounds can be produced.

If you are a fan of getting sound from John Petrucci, this will be your main weapon to crank your amp and get the sound.

I normally use this pedal with Mesa Mark IV head and I always get filled and shaped sound from the amp.

Na, da waren aber alle gespannt, als die Anzeigen von MESA/Boogie herauskamen in denen der Grid Slammer mit seinen 3 Geschwistern angekündigt wurde. DIE bauen auch Pedale?!

So ging es mir natürlich auch, wenngleich ich nicht wirklich als ausgewiesener MESA/Boogie-Fan bekannt bin. Aber das ist eben alles Geschmackssache und eine andere Geschichte.

Ich habe neben meinen etablierten Pedalen noch eine leicht andere "Geschmacksnote" gesucht, die gut aufgelöst, dennoch etwas drücken kann und sich amplike anfühlt. Sprich dynamisch wie ein guter nonmaster Marshall auf die Spielweise reagiert.

Nun zum Gerät. - Das Outfit ist von oben gesehen sehr schön gemacht. Die schwarz/silbernde Reliefplatte sieht gediegen aus. Der Bodendeckel schaut aber unregelmäßig und an den runden Gehäuseecken eher spitz uber die Gehäusekontur hervor. Das ist nicht schön, wirkt sich aber natürlich nicht auf den Klang aus ...

Das Gehäuse ist zudem mit 4,5cm ohne/6,5cm mit Knöpfen und Switch recht hoch. Durch den blaugrün gehaltenen Effektlack schimmert das Alu metallisch durch, was dem Pedal eine, für meinen Geschmack etwas billig-kitschige Note verleiht. Aber auch das ist Geschmackssache.

... und wie klingt der jetzt?
Naja, man merkt dem Grid Slammer seine Herkunft aus dem Hause MESA/Boogie schon an. Soll heißen diese ganz gewisse Art von nüchterner Transparenz in den oberen Mitten zeigt die Familienzugehörigkeit deutlich an. - Ich hatte mir beim Testen sowieso vorgenommen, den Sound mal ohne diese "Oh MESA/Boogie!!!" Ehrfurcht zu beurteilen. Was bei mir, siehe oben, sowieso nicht gegeben ist. ;-)

Der Zerrgrad läßst sehr gut mit dem Anschlag steuern. Wirklich sehr amplike! Gut gemacht. Etwas Pegel braucht das Pedal jedoch, um "in Schwung zu kommen". Soll heißen die Paula kommt gut, Strat und Tele brauchen Unterstützung. HighGain ist nicht seine Sache. Aber klassisch rocken lässt sich gut damit. Auch Sololinien in den hohen lagen kommen noch schön saftig und stabil, und besitzen dennoch mit eine schöne Transparenz. Die Bässe sind etwas weniger ausgeprägt. Das hilft gegen Matsch in den tieferen Lagen.

Im mittleren Zerrbereich glänzt der Ton schön und Humbucken bekommen eine schöne präsente Note. Auch eine gute Tele rockt damit kernig ab.

Der Tonregler ist selbst bei Rechtsanschlag noch zu gebrauchen und wirkt generell sehr breitbandig und für meinen Geschmack immer musikalisch. Sehr gut.

Höhen rund, Bässe weniger ausgeprägt!? - Gab's da nicht schon mal sowas?
Richtig, und ja, irgendwie grün ist der MESA Grid Slammer auch. :-)) Dennoch kling er nicht typisch nach Tube Screamer. Eher breiter und feiner.

Ich denke MESA Engineering hat hier für eine klassische Anwendung einen sehr guten, eigenen Weg gefunden. Dieses Pedal macht Lust auf mehr und ich könnte mir gut vorstellen, daß der Sound sich als neue Geschmacksnote etablieren kann.

Ich schicke jedenfalls ihn nicht zurück! .. und das wegen des Sounds, nicht wegen des Namens.

Classic Overdrive

Il prodotto di per se non ha bisogno di presentazioni. E' un overdrive classico tra i prodotti meglio riusciti di casa Mesa. Il prodotto si adatta completamente anche all'impiego con il basso elettrico, io l'ho di recente integrato nel mio setup live con risultati oltre le aspettative. Nota il prodotto viene venduto gia' completo di batteria a 9 volt internamente, se lo utilizzate in pedaliera con alimentazione esterna, rimuovete la batteria per evitare danni da ossidazione.
