I knew this would be trouble! (please read) :-)

Why did I buy it?
Recently i've felt static, most of my gear are romplers, I sit at the keyboard and don't feel that I am getting "down and dirty", I'm not going down the modular rabbit hole without a fight, so I wanted a cheap device to get me back performing, hands on rather than page diving while making my brain work a little.

What's it like?
I've only had it a couple of days and can't put it down, although I must admit I immediately hooked it up via midi to use a full size keyboard, for me this was a must but if we do manage to travel again you can use the built in keys for instant gratification, luckily I have room to set this tiny unit on the top of the keyboard so i can tweak at the same time, oh by the way you can use the cover to change the stand config but it does slide around a bit, time to dig out those sticky pads. Some may say knobs feel good to touch if a little wobbly, but we are talking about a 250+ euro device, they aren't going to fall off.

This is NOT a rompler, don't expect all the patches to be fully evolved sounds, don't get me wrong some of them are pretty nice, they need to be tweaked to get their full potential and this box lets you EASILY manipulate them and let's be honest that's where the hours of fun lie, although it's going to take time to get the knobs functions into my muscle memory.

I can see some people not "getting" this, but that old adage of "you get out what you put in" comes to mind, comparisons either good or bad to softsynths will be made, if you want a complete set of stunning sounds instantly without tweaking you're going to have to look elsewhere.

4 note poly.....hmmm it's funny how prior to Skulpt you get used to playing a three or four note chord in the right hand and doubling up on the bass root....well Skulpt does have some stunning pads and you'll want to do this....ooops, looks like you need to buy another Skulpt and polychain, good work Modal! much easier to grab my money in little chunks. :-)

So WHY have i not marked it up to 5 stars all over.... well for me there's a couple of bits.

i'm getting older, my eyesight is not as good as it used to be, the text is tiny on here! ok, this is not really Modal's fault, but if you don't have perfect vision it might be an issue to you. Add to that some of the leds shine over the text making it (for me at least) impossible to read, but turn the led off, read the text and turn it back on sorts that, minor moan.

My 2 year old Windows 10 rig has had a couple of intermittent "can't see device" when using the app, but that could be me, talking about the app, I actually like it, by the way it's free, and a "must have" to get deeper into the synth, which I am still very much at the beginning of my journey.

So do you want to see a real pros / cons list?

+ Compact
+ Easy to tweak
+ Huge potential from a sounds perspective
+ Built in sequencer & arpeggiator
+ Couple of effects to boost the overall sound
+ FULL SIZE MIDI ports !
+ Will make you buy another one for 8 note poly or check out demos of the Argon8

- Tiny text
- Very bright leds means you can't see the text next to them

- Will make you buy another for polychain!!! but is this a pro or con?
- With full size midi ports why mini jacks?
- If people are going to Polychain they need a stand for two or more, what are you waiting for?
- Could have had more arp patterns
