Great value Moog sound and performance
Arthur Stone, 05.01.2015
At half the cost of a Sub37 the Sub Phatty provides much of the same sound and features. I've had the SP for a few months now so I'm over the 'honeymoon period' but, in truth, it's a happy marriage & I have found true love.

I did consider a modular but was sold on the value the SP offered when considered as a collection of modular units...plus genuine Moog sound and filter.

Pros:
+ it has the 'Moog sound'
+ very well built...robust, solid
+ great design, interface & ergonomics
+ highly tweakable, mini-modular (without cables)
+ good, stable software integration...VST editor for DAW's or standalone
+ support & ongoing development from Moog: warranty/software updates
+ priced well; good value

Downers:
- approx. 1/3 of performance functions are accessed via a 'shift' button which alternates the front panel controls to new functions. Not so much of a problem with the software editor (which displays all the controls/functions) but it will probably take me a year to learn all the hidden functions...so no issue in the long-term.
- when a new preset is selected there is no indication of the status (new position) of the panel controls; these can only be determined by sweeping the control and listening for changes. In use it's not as big a problem as it sounds & the software editor displays the hidden functions.

In conclusion, there are no real negatives that cannot be overcome with time & practice and/or the software editor. I've read on the Moog forum that there may be a software arpeggiator, an increase in presets & other useful functions in future updates...that would cover all the wishes I could reasonably expect.

I still lust after the Sub37: duophonic; full front panel controls; bell & whistles; bigger better keyboard; etc. - but I'm content with the sound and good value of the SP. It's got the Moog sound & it vibes : -)

Vintage vibe Sub Phatty
David R. 720, 09.10.2013
The Sub Phatty is built like a tank and has a very vintage analogue sound.

Some people have said that the keyboard is to small at 2 octaves, but in
use I had no trouble playing bass lines and solos.

As long as you know what octave you will need and set it before
you begin only the most outlandish jazzy trippy solo will catch you out.

I use it and like it more than my voyager.

The sound is more versatile and sounds good playing
anything from jazz, funk, pop and rock.
Not just restricted to techno or spacy ambient Vangelis type music.

It has a snappy amp and filter with a funky 70's 80's vibe.

You don't have easy access to some of the more detailed editing unless you use
the software editor.

The Sub Phatty dose NOT come with the editor software on disk, you have to register
it on Moog web site before you can download it.

I had no problems using the software in standalone windows 7 and as a vst
in 16 bit Cubase, but had drop outs in the 64 bit vst version.
I since read that moog are aware and already working on a solution.

I think the Sub Phatty is Moog Music's best sounding synth of the new generation of
moog synths.
