Morley VAI-II

Steve Vai Wah PedalThe "Bad Horsie" Wah was developed exactly according to the wishes of master guitarist Steve Vai, and typically, Vai was not satisfied with the achieved (high) standard - a VAI Bad Horsie II had to therefore be created of course!

The most striking feature lies in the fact that the pedal does not have to be switched on. As soon as you step on it, the wah effect is active, you take your foot off again, you automatically hear the normal sound again. Since Mr. Vai preferably employs the Wah for strongly distorted sounds, the Bad Horsie is precisely tailored for such sounds. Typical of Morley: The silent-running electro-optical knob and the built-in buffer that prevents signal loss due to long cables. The great improvement or (rather) extension: 2 sounds can be customised, the Contour and wave servo controller allowing a lot of good sounds to be created.

  • Touch Wah with switch-off delay
  • New version with 2 Sounds
  • Contour and Wavesound

The main attraction with this pedal is how it automatically turns itself on and off, making it ideal for live use. It does this flawlessly and has since made kicking a traditional wah pedal on and off a thing of the past.

Sound wise this pedal is fantastic. It offers a standard sound which is a very wide and rich sweeping wah and also a contour option which give you the option of dialing in your own specific wah eq and adjusting volume levels. I find this useful for when you're using the wah with clean and distorted sounds. You can have one for each which makes it very flexible.

My only criticism of this pedal is how heavy and large it is but at the same time this makes it sturdy and extremely reliable.

Since buying this product it has had a permanent place on my pedal board and definitely the most used. I've had zero problems with it and would highly recommend!

Why are more wah pedals not built like this?
MrGuyJP, 05.03.2018
The main thing with this is the switchless design. Having to stomp on a wah pedal in the traditional way can really become a pain in some situations where you have to have it on and off quickly. I do lots of theatre work and it is a great wah pedal for me simply because it just works instantly when you step on it. Sound wise it doesn't seem to have a super smooth sweep to it so it's not quite like the classic crybaby sound but crybaby wah pedals seem to have a reputation for sucking tone when not in use and can be a pain to turn on and off. Also, I would imagine that this pedal is less likely to go wrong as it is an optical design rather than mechanical.

It would be fair to say that the development of the wah-wah pedal has been somewhat experimental over the years.
