GET THIS INSTRUMENT!

GET THIS INSTRUMENT!

This is an instrument of instruments, a masterpiece, a grand work of art and a unique platform to explore most any kind of sonic creation you could think to generate with a hybrid analogue/digital synthesizer.

If you were to skip right through and ignore the words in the user manual, you would miss out on some valuable nuggets, and especially the advice to just let it sit and "warm up" for a while at first.

At first, this thing seemed completely out of whack, doing really wonky things like crossing signals, playing sounds that shouldn't be there, and not being tuned whatsoever like you might expect to to be.. And, things were not consistent from one minute to the next.

But after a few hours it warmed up and works great. Make sure you update to the latest firmware, make sure you're loading a fresh, blank preset from bank A or B, and make sure you give it plenty of time to warm up, and you'll have a beauty of a gem in the Medusa!

After the initial warm up and calibrations, it now seems to function perfectly every time I turn it on, enabling me to explore and create without any real limitation!

Thank you so much Dreadbox and Polyend! Words cannot express how awesome this thing is!

with firmware 4.0 a clear winner
TZTH, 09.04.2021
If you are into more experimental electronica and like a more gritty sound this is it. With firmware 4.0 you'll get 6 voice FM that can also be applied to wavetable. The remaining 3 analog OSC's can be played via midi channel 9 as a mono synth. All that trough an analog filter.
I don't know any other synth for that price + that very nice hardware that will offer that. Just keep in mind that it's a special synth.
If you need a standard polysynth I would look somewhere else - the minilogue XD is an excellent alternative.

Inspiring new ideas and sounds
Steven6720, 15.06.2020
The Polyend & Dreadbox Medusa is intended to offer some originality in its approach to synthesis and sequencer. So, if you are considering buying this product then I guess, like me, you are looking for something a little different.

Medusa succeeds on that front. I like the mix of analogue and digital oscillators, allowing multi-layered timbres. The way these are mapped in monophonic, poly 1 and poly 2 modes also enforces the medusa's own character on to the sounds you make and how you play them. Couple this with the really flexible envelopes and LFOs and the synth is a powerful engine for sound design. The sequencer then extends the alternative approach with step and real-time recording via the 64 pads and functionality. The pads feel great in my opinion and can have modulation parameters mapped to X, Y position on the pad and pressure (z), so playing the synth live is very expressive. Again this promotes a different way of playing the synth compared to using a midi keyboard. At the moment you can record any changes to the synth engine as part of the sequence, however the performance modulations caused by pad pressure etc. do not appear to be captured. That would be a nice addition in my opinion. There is a useful random button to randomise patch sound for individual sequence steps and complete sequences. Good for randomising performances and creating new ideas.

The housing feels sturdy and the workflow is pretty intuitive after a few minutes of experimentation. Personally, it would be nice to have some built-in effects coupled with stereo output to complete the compact setup for live performance, but hey, you can't have everything!

Best bang for the buck hybrid analog machine. It sounds thick and the digital oscillators add so much to the timbre of the analog ones. It can sound as a Dreadbox analog machine if hou want it or like a wavetable synth and anything in between. The Grid is a super feature by itself. You can parameter lock or store chords on each pad and generate so many ideas. There is a ton of modulation sources also. Build quality is top notch also. There are some minor quirks like the LFOs that either run unsynced and freely or synced and retriggered ie you cannot have an LFO run in sync and not retrigger with every note, but that's something that probably will be fixed in a later firmware update. All in all this is my favourite synth at the momment and the best synth purchase I've made in a long time.
