Wow, just wow

A really clever piece of kit. The first time I used it everyone took out their phones and started to film it in action. I've never seen such a reaction before for a product.

It's not 100% accurate but it is consistent and that makes it worthwhile. I can keep all my guitars in tune very quickly.

Why the 4* rating? It's down to the App. To use the App you have to turn on location services on your phone. Why? I disable it because I value my privacy and I don't want my location shared for no reason. There is no reason why they need to know where I am. I can't use the app, I wish they'd turn it off.

Overall however I'd still give it five stars as it's well built, small, the battery life is good and I can through it in a gig back and it takes up no room, it's smaller than a pack of cigarettes.

Yes, it's a bit of a gimmick, yes you can use your ear or a traditional tuner etc, etc, but it's awesome when you change strings. It will even wind/ unwind for you with no effort.

Works surprisingly well

I bought this tuner for my Floyd Rose guitars -- anyone who's had one knows how painfully long is the process of adjusting the bridge balance, changing string heights, switching tunings, or restringing them altogether.

Frankly I didn't expect this to work so well. While it'd previously take me almost an hour of iterating around to change tunings and perfectly (re)set up a Floyd Rose guitar, this little gadget brought that down to maybe 15-20 minutes. Worth noting is you can't use it for fine tuning (on guitars featuring a nut locking system and fine tuning bolts): it only works on machine heads, so I still do some manual fine tuning at the end.

Here's some features that made my life simpler:
* Variable speed string winding/unwinding - this makes lowering/raising the tension almost immediate, so the process of iterating through saddle intonation, string heights, neck relief is much quicker.
* Surprisingly accurate string tuning - in my experience it's good to a few cents, more than enough for the repetitive work of guitar setup.
* Extremely well thought out UX - it takes very few button presses to start doing anything, and there's little user intervention required while using it; for example, it automatically selects the next string after a successful tuning, and automatically starts tuning when you pluck: just place it on the correct machine head.
* Custom settings for each instrument - this makes it easy to switch between guitars without having to fiddle around with any settings (of course, it won't automatically recognise instruments, you still need to push a button).
* Fairly comprehensive app - allows defining custom tunings and instruments, which is a great if you want absolute control over what happens; I've found that for a basic EADGBE tuning it consistently tunes to -2, -2, -1, 0, 0, 0, which might be on purpose to compensate for Taylor or Feiten intonation systems on various guitars. Tuning the low E to -2 cents ensures that hard picking the open string is pitch perfect, as well as fretting A (5th fret) pitch perfect. I could adjust (or disable) all of this within the app.

Beware that the way you hold the tuner can have an impact on whether or not it actually works. Roadie prides themselves with using vibration detection to determine pitch, and I think it actually senses your hand's vibration (at least more so than the guitar's). This is certainly a novel and ingenious approach, and works great even in noisy environments, but make sure you hold it with some grip and that the guitar is close to your chest. The good news is that it either works or it doesn't -- if it doesn't, it's obvious.

So should you get it? I think this Roadie can save you a huge amount of time setting up guitars, especially with Floyd Rose bridges. Tuning is much more accurate than I've expected, and I wouldn't hesitate to trust it with normal guitars.
