Seymour Duncan SH-4 NH Slant

Seymour Duncan SH-4 is a best selling pickup from SD, the one being reviewed is adjusted for Gibson Nighthawk (which is not produced any more) and a recent reissue model - Epiphone Nighthawk. The only visible difference is that the pickup is slanted in order to suite an atypical pickup cavity and cover in the Nighthawk guitar. It's only available in black (which suits the target guitars well), no zebra option.

The pickup is characterized by a higher output than the factory pickups in the Nighthawks. It cleans nicely with the guitar volume down, therefore it's still versatile over most styles.

It is not suitable for an extremely heavy modern metal and djent, it doesn't properly cut and gets slightly muddy with extreme gain levels. But the Nighthawk range wasn't designed for those styles of music in the first place.

It excels at most other genres, from jazz, blues, pop, rock and lower-gain metal. It's perfect for fusion, especially in the smooth mode with the tone rolled down to 3/4.

The wiring provides a coil split option. It's lowering the output and produces some hum, but otherwise doesn't change pickup characteristic that much (comparing to other splitting bridge pickups). In the coil-split mode it cuts through the mix properly, but looses a bit of the smoothness.

The only flaw I can point is slightly loose material covering the sides of the pickup and a lower resale value of the pickup, given that the Nighthawk guitars are not that popular and it's essentially the only guitar in which this pickup would fit. Therefore there won't be that much demand for the slanted version. On the other hand it is the only viable replacement bridge pickup for those types of guitars, whose factory pickups are not that good themselves.

I can strongly recommend upgrading to the SD SH-4 pickup, which makes playing Nighthawks a much more pleasant and versatile experience. It suits Nighthawk's atypical scale length of 25.5 inch, which distinguishes this Gibson/Epiphone model from other in the range.

Ce modèle est mythique ! le Jb à déjà ravis nombre de hardos, bluesmen et thrasheur ! Bon déjà merci à Thomann , l'un des seuls sites à le commercialiser en europe !
En France, même les commerciaux de Seymour ne connaissai pas ce modèle !
Bref si vous avez les relic Epiphone Nighthawk ou les Nighthawk d'époque (1996) comme moi bah c'est une belle opportunitée de changement .
Le M série d'époque est bien fade si vous voulez faire du hard ou des musiques musclés ; mes harmoniques ne sortait pas .
Depuis je l'ai changé et j'ai pas reconnu ma gratte ! une machine à riffer et des solis qui chante ! les harmoniques à la Zakk Wylde pêtent enfin .
Ce micro est la seul alternative pour avoir une Nighthawk tout terrain

Schön daß sich ein Hersteller dem Thema Nighthawk Replacement Pickup zugewand hat. Typischer Duncan Sound, ein prima Tonabnehmer. Aber bei der Produktion ist man wohl einfach in der Form an die Sache herangegangen normale Bobins einfach schräg zu montieren. Das ist natürlich nur die halbe Arbeit und keineswegs so präzise wie man es von Seymour Duncan erwarten könnte. Im Ergebniss sind die Polpices nicht genau unter den Saiten! Unter der D Saite ist das noch halbwegs korrekt nach außen hin sind sie jedoch zunehmend versetzt. Bei der tiefen E Saite sind das dann wohlwollend betrachtet 2 mm zur Mitte versetzt und bei der hohen e Saite dann 4 mm zur Mitte. Das ist wirklich unschön. Ich konnte klanglich keine markante Beeinflussung feststellen aber optisch bleibt das ein herber Mangel den man so von einem Markenhersteller nicht erwarten würde. Es gibt jedoch nichts vergleichbares auf dem Markt und somit kein besseres Ausweichprodukt.

Dans la mesure où Seymour Duncan est le seul à proposer une alternative pour les Nighthawk, il n'y a aucun élément de comparaison pour dire si c'est pour vous la bonne option...

Cela dit SD propose sa vision pour la Nighthawk et il faut reconnaitre que ce JB "slanté" donne de la crédibilité à la version Epiphone de la hawk. Attention, j'aime ma guitare, pour le prix on en a pour son argent, mais avec le JB votre guitare sonnera comme une grande ! Presque au point de la faire jouer sur scène ? Pourquoi pas après tout la magie est surtout au bout de vos doigts :-) En tout cas le JB vous donnera de bon graves, pas brouillon ni criards. Il vous donnera une belle définition des notes malgré un niveau de sortie qui vous obligera à bien vous appliquer de la main gauche (ou droite !). Les accords sonnent juste (médium équilibrés) et les palm mutes vous donnerons une assise sonore très appréciable.

En bref si vous vous êtes lassé de votre Nighthawk, ne la condamnez pas trop vite, elle a des qualités qui méritent de la faire upgrader, notamment par ce micro qu'on ne présente plus !
