Perfect choice
niconame, 12.07.2019
I play the pedal through an Orange Ad30 (No FxLoop) and 1960A Marshall cabinet. The sounds I get goes from heavy stoner rock, psychedelic, heavy delayed atmospheric sounds and slapback sounds.
The pedal is on almost every tune I play, combined with Reverb, Distortion, Octave or other delay pedals.

My objective was to buy a digital delay and Looper separately. I opted by this one that had them both. I also wanted a simple pedal to understand and to work with. I didn’t wanted to loose hours programing complicated and delay units.
I also had to consider that since I don’t have a fx loop on the ad30, the delay had to be a extremely clear in order the keep my sound clear enough and out of “merky waters”, since the ad30 is a very peculiar amp to combine with time based pedals.
The Flashback X4 exceled all my expectations. But of course, you need to keep your gain controlled to keep the delay repetitions clear or else they will distort.. a lot

Pros:
Easy, very easy to use
Prestine sounds
Lots of possibilities and types of delays
Looper does the job and is very easy to use.
It’s FUN as it permits you to do all those crazy stuff, crazy people do with delays

Cons:
Looper only has 40 sec
The on/off knob of the looper isn’t brilliant and should be considered a small design flaw. It’s not very accessible.
You can’t swap presets while in looper mode.

If you don’t have the patience to spend hours figuring out how a pedal works and still want a very good quality delay sound and lots of different delays sounds, this is the right choice.
Absolutely recommend it and this brand doesn’t disappoint in terms of quality.

It's almost perfect

Ok, so this is an incredible sounding delay, but there are some catches that I wasn't counting on.
First the pros: very solid, well built, easy to use and control.
9V DC supply (around 200mA), center negative, very silent, almost no tone sucking/volume drop, buffered or true bypass modes available, rhythmic sub-division switch, looper with undo/redo functions, and, oh, an amazing sound!
Best of all: the tone editor application. That doesn't give you access to programing tone prints nor all the parameters TC uses to make their artists toneprints, but you can make some serious sounding stuff with this, from assigning multiple parameters to the knobs to controling them with an expression pedal. TC suggests a 25k log exp pedal, but I've used the M-Audio and it worked.
Take time with this application and you'll get yourself some very cool sounding delays. Check out youtube demos on this.

Now the cons: footprint (it's big) but hey, if you want three presets at the tip of your foot, you'll need to get room in your board.

Now for the serious cons: first, analog delays do not change pitch when you change delay time. This is something any analog delay emulation should do. Analog delays do not re-calculate time, they change frequency. I don't know why TC wouldn't do this...
Second, no matter what I tried (including the 25k log pot they suggest on the exp pedal) there is no way you can control parameters without afecting the delay time. This is a serious issue, and reported by several users: the only way I found to avoid this was to program from scratch some delay tones and NOT assigning delay time to any knob. The drawback is, since you cannot access artist toneprints programs or any pre-defined delay on the Toneprint Knob, you cannot use them if you want to use the expression pedal.

The way I use delays is with an expression pedal, so this one is not for me. 4 stars.
If you don't use an exp pedal, go for it, this is a good investment.
