Unbelievable bass!
David215, 29.05.2014
I already have TC Helicon's discontinued Voicesolo 300xt and a Mackie SRM150 to compare. In my testing so far the Voicesolo FX150 blows both of these other units out of the water. The biggest surprise is just how much deep bass you can get. With the tone controls flat you get what you might expect from a vocal monitor, the response falls quickly below 200Hz. But wind up the bass and turn down the mid and treble and as if by magic you now have a bass guitar amp. They rave about this in the marketing blurb and frankly I didn't believe it.....now I do. I've run a signal generator through it and with the bass tone control fully up you actually get usable volume just below 50Hz....simply astonishing for a little speaker weighing 3kg. The driver looks the same as the older 300xt ....but the dsp control and amp.....and a sealed enclosure all add up to a far more pleasing sound. The SRM150 is very loud, but it lacks any sort of tweeter, and bass response below 80Hz is really non existent.....turn the bass tone control up and all you get is distortion. The control system on the FX150 is very clever too, detecting what is plugged in and highlighting the right buttons. The vocal Tone and reverb also sound good. My only complaint is there is a little "zipper noise" on the master volume, which is clearly a digital and not analog control. There is a slight haziness to the sound as I suspect there is a lot of clever compression going on. These are minor points though....I'm going to sell my SRM150 now ;-)

A problem solver; nothing legendary...

First of all it's a lot smaller than i expected. It's a tiny little thing! It's really light and easy to carry (even for the ladies). I advice to get the bundle with the softcase, it fits like a glove! So it's easy to fit almost anywhere in a small local pub stage and it looks neat. The lights look beautiful and make the device easy to operate in low light conditions.

All the features on the device (vocal tone, eq, reverb, aux input, solo mode etc) work perfectly fine and they are actually useful! There are very detailed overviews on YouTube, check them out. The bass response is particularly surprising for such a little thing (with the help of eq of knobs course), which makes it useful as more than just a vocal monitor. You can get a full satisfying sound from your guitar or keyboard, even the bass guitar(!), as well as vocals. If you crank the highs a bit too much it tends to get in feedback though (which is natural). So getting a good vocal mic for a clear sound is a better solution rather than tweeking eq to compensate the quality loss.

All that said, remember the volume of the device is not groundshaking! (And that's the only reason i gave the sound feature 4 stars!) It is a useful little fella, but it's not for big, loud stages. It'll give you a lot of comfort if you're planning to use it as a personal monitor in a small club, in an acoustic setting. But it will get lost under the power of a big PA system. So adjust your expectations accordingly. ;)
