Great synth at an amazing price!
TrEr, 31.05.2017
I wasn't expecting too much at this price, especially after being massively disappointed by the Volca Keys. But the Waldorf Rocket is in a TOTALLY different league than any of the Volcas. The Rocket is a very cool sounding synth that sounds a lot more expensive than it is.

The sound really is excellent! Using the Wave/Tune knobs and the Saw/Square selector there's an impressive range of sounds available. The drive function sounds really great too! Really raw sounding and with a distinct voice of it's own. I can easily justify buying the Rocket even with a lot more expensive synths in my studio. The combination of digital oscillator and analog filter sounds amazing here and fits really well together. The filter is amazing too and totally blows any of the Volcas out of the water. Its comparable to a lot more expensive synths. The LFO also works great and the arpeggiator has some cool and weird patterns in addition to the usual stuff.

There's obviously a few things that could have been better at this price:

-The envelope section is very basic with no control for attack (but I very rarely missed it to be honest).

-Some of the oscillator settings require very precise positioning of the Wave/Tone knobs. Definitely not something for dark stages or situations where a particular sound is needed FAST. I like to think of the Rocket as more of a studio tool than a live instrument.

-The build quality isn't the greatest. Pots are wobbly and the whole unit feels a bit fragile. Again, I probably wouldn't buy this for touring and live use. But more than adequate for studio use.

-The paraphonic mode didn't do much for me. I guess it's a nice bonus to be able to play chords in a pinch but the Rocket isn't really meant for this and doesn't sound at it's best when in paraphonic mode. If you need chords get a proper polyphonic synth instead.

-The headphone output is ridiculously noisy, bordering on useless. Thankfully the line outputs are quiet enough for recording.

-USB power supply... perhaps it's just me but I absolutely hate USB power supplies. At least the Rocket uses the larger (type B?) kind of USB and not the tiny, fragile mini/micro crap. And I suppose it's a good thing to be able to get power and midi through the same cable. Still wish it had a separate power input for standalone use though.

But for all it's shortcomings I will still HIGHLY RECOMMEND the Rocket. It's unbelievably cheap, it sounds GREAT and most importantly, it is FUN!!!

Never buy a Rocket on spec....
Wayne M., 01.09.2013
....unless it's the Waldorf Rocket. This awesome little box has a filter that is off the charts. Couple that with ease of use, portability and a solid design, I'd recommend the Waldorf Rocket to everyone who wants to expand their sonic arsenal.

Low price great sound
Mekkael, 05.07.2013
This little unit has a great sound for its relative low price.
USB connecting is great and it really helps to have both midi in and out when programming sounds.
Build quality feels very good on the top panel but somewhat light and cheep on the rest of the plastic body. There are some limitations that appear on after you start playing with the Rocket which I personally find a bit annoying. The arpeggiator speed is really hard to set to a specific setting even though the rocket seems to accept tempo sync through the midi and the lfo cannot be retriggered by note which is a bit annoying.
However the sounds is just incredible. I have put it to the test in various styles from the chord function to base, and more acidy sounds and the rocket really delivers. The digital oscillator produces a really crisp sound while the analog filter provides the Rocket with a good tonal range. you also have the boost and osc functions to play with which give the rocket a very impressive range of sounds. Yes it is a budget hybrid with limitations but its definately a good addition to your sound pallet
