Haunting Ambient Creepiness in a Box!

Another pedal of the highest quality from Walrus Audio.
It is also absolutely astonishing that the sound it produces is exactly as portrayed by the amazing design. This particular cave is very deep indeed and as you stand over the skeletal remains it is easy to imagine the sound of distant water drips or perhaps a loose stone falling adding to the overall ambient creepiness.

What seems to make this possible are the wonderful moving reflections which give a distinct feeling of space.
For many years I have used dozens of reverb processors including the top ‘name’ brands like Lexicon, Eventide, Strymon, T.C. Electronic, GFI Systems etc.. All superb and all very different.
However, with this Descent from Walrus Audio there is the distinct feeling that you are actually underground.
It is an uncanny experience!

Build quality is second to none and it is beautifully made inside and out.
I can thoroughly recommend running a T.C. Nova Echo from it with some modulation with no need to switch the interior Descent setting to stereo if the instrument has a mono source like a guitar.
To use with any synth the interior switch can be easily changed to Stereo as long as a stereo jack is plugged in.

The Hall, Reverse and Shimmer settings can be set to taste and there are many sound creation possibilities. Three Presets can then be easily saved and there is a nice overspill from one to the other.
Turning the Descent Off however, will return the instrument to dry with no reverb overspill.

With every effect pedal it is impossible to describe in detail much other than the given features.
This though, is a pedal that will probably be more appealing to Ambient musicians.
It has a very distinctive sound and is like no other I have heard.
There are various demos online but for my ears Antoine Michauds excellent 10 Marvelous Ambient Sounds Demo best represents this pedal.
It is marvelous indeed and a brilliant creation by Walrus Audio.

This pedal might strike one as being somewhat niche, the sort of thing you only buy if you already know it's the sound you want. And while I would argue that those that like their reverb on the standard side would be surprised at what this pedal lends to your tone, this is very much the case. The Descent is designed for one purpose (ethereal, symphonic octave reverb), and it's not a purpose everyone requires. But here's the thing: it does it better than any pedal I've ever seen.

The Descent is smaller than a BlueSky, but at the least equal in sound fidelity, and with its own set of parameters to alter. The tweak and diffusion knobs operate slightly differently on each setting, so there's a lot to explore and get to grips with, which some may find tedious or overwhelming (I personally love this stuff). It's worth noting also that the Shimmer setting has a considerably smaller decay time than hall; it's not a problem (There's still plenty, and the tweak knob allows it to double back on itself almost like a delay would), but it's worth noting. Its use of expression pedal input is also something incredibly creative, and inspires creativity; each of the three programmable presets can effectively have a 'maximum' and 'minimum' setting for each control, that you can glide between at will, making your ambient swells incredibly easy to manage and control.

I also found a surprisingly subtle use for the pedal; I've been using the lower octave on the reverb trail to add a bit of low end growl to distorted lead lines. It works a treat, and sits nicely in a mix too.

All in all, this is the best pedal purchase I've ever made; if you need more texture to your rhytmn section, or you need to sound like you're playing in a church that's flying through the cosmos, this is the pedal for you.

Nette Feature aber nicht sehr durchdacht

Ein interessantes, aber fehlerbelastetes Reverb-Pedal. Ich benutze es derzeit in meinem Heimstudio/DAWless-Setup um Mono-Synths und einem DrumBrute Impact mehr Räumlichkeit einzuhauchen.

Was es als Reverb interessant macht, ist dass es fast gar keine Klangfärbung post-Reverb gibt und man das meiste nur über eine Oktavpedal-Funktion (+/- 1 Oktave) vor dem eigentlich Reverb-Effekt regelt. Das ist dabei unabhängig vom Modus, so dass der eigentliche "Shimmer"-Modus eher zu einem einfachen, cleanen Reverb wird um der Oktavfunktion mehr raum zu bieten. Der Reverse-Modus ist praktisch kein Revern sondern eher ne "Reverse-Slapback-Delay". Hall ist ein sehr weites, höhlenartiges Reverb mit vielen Obertönen.

Es kann durch die Oktavfunktion gerade mit Synthesizern sehr klingen, hat aber exponentielle Mixregler, die man trivial mit einem Blend-Regler hätte designen können. Der Oktavalgorithmus vor dem Reverb kann einige sehr coole Ergebnisse bringen, ist aber etwas unberechenbar und sollte nicht mit einem klassischen Shimmer verwechselt werden (was ich ursprünglich tat). Das nervigste jedoch ist, dass es permanent Hallfahnen erzeugt - selbst wenn kein Signal anliegt oder die Reverb-Time auf ein Minimum reduziert ist.

Mit all diesen Eigenheiten kann ich es wirklich nur Hall-Enthusiasten mit tiefer Tasche empfehlen, da es bei dem Preis einfach zu viele unpraktische Nachteile hat. Mein Setup wirds daher in jedem Fall wieder verlassen.

Atmosferische werelden gaan open

Ik was op zoek naar een reverb-pedaal dat meer kon doen dan de meeste standaard reverbs. Dit met het oog om atmosferische post-rock mee te maken. En man, was dat een schot in de roos. Drie verschillende reverb-settings (hall, reverse en shimmer), die ontzettend customizable zijn en met drie instelbare presets, is dit een relatief klein kastje met rijke werelden aan atmosfeer.

Positieve punten:
+ Stevige behuizing, met metalen knoppen van hoge kwaliteit
+ Ongeacht welke setting, kan je altijd een octaaf hoger en octaaf lager aan het reverb-signaal toevoegen
+ Presets makkelijk in te stellen en te wijzigen
+ Prachtig geluid, zowel bij stereo- als monogebruik
+ Die artwork!
+ Stille switches
+ Aansluiting voor expressiepedaal

Negatieve punten:
- Niet meteen heel intuïtief, eerste uren veel de handleiding moeten raadplegen
- Voegt wat ruis toe aan het signaal
- Bij het draaien aan de knoppen hoor je zachte klikjes in het signaal

Samenvatting:
Dit is absoluut mijn nieuwe favoriete pedaal op mijn pedalboard (misschien een gedeelde eerste plek met de Earthquaker Avalanche Run v2). De Descent voegt een hele nieuwe dimensie toe aan de dingen die ik speel. Als jij ook dromerige soundscapes wil neerzetten, is dit hèt pedaal dat je moet hebben.
