Great Guitar But Will Be Better After Service
Laszlo Coffee Shop, 01.11.2019
I bought the guitar after many months of research into purchasing a guitar that would be my 'go to' guitar for many years to come. I originally identified the Revstar series as my favourite, listened to reviews of competitors and then came back to it and made my decision. I was captivated by this particular model in the series, the RS820CR.

The guitar arrived safely and quickly, with all tools required for set up. The sound is amazing, I have never heard pick ups so good. To compare with other guitars I have played in my 20 years plus experience, which includes some top models by many brands, the sound of this guitar is definitely up there. The volume and tone knobs are very useful, and the 'dry switch' is great too - a lot better than others I've encountered. The feel of the neck and fret board are sensational. The neck may feel a bit bulky at first for players who are used to Fender or similar style necks, as I was, but I got used to and preferred it within a few minutes of playing.

I played it with every spare moment for a few days and started to notice issues as is unfortunately the norm with new guitars. The strings buzz off the frets because of insufficient fret fall away, and open chords are sharp because the nut hasn't been cut correctly. In fact the radius of the nut is completely different to to the radius of the fret board and the bridge. These issues are very frustrating for purchasers of new guitars, but unfortunately is the norm. I have never bought a new guitar that hasn't had this kind of problem from any manufacturer.

A possible design flaw is that the volume pot gets in the way of adjusting the treble side of the bridge with the tool provided. I found that after initial loosening with the tool, a suitably sized coin will suffice.

So to summarise, this guitar is fantastic and I would recommend it to anyone despite my observations. There is an array of wonderful sounds available on this guitar. The guitar looks great and feels great. But the caution from my experience with brand new guitars is be prepared to have to get some work done despite what any dealer or manufacturer says. Thomann do actually offer these kind of services for a fee. If the guitar came ready for the player to set up, it would get full marks. The materials used and the build quality are otherwise exceptional.
