Excellent for it's price

Colm Rogers, 18.05.2018
The Zoom H6 is quite an impressive upgrade from it's previous generations (particularly the H4n and H4n Pro). It is a completely reinvented recorder/mixer and is definitely a go-to for small to mid range budget productions. Here's what I love about the H6:

Pros:
The level adjusting rotars are a very nice inclusion and feel great. It's very handy to be able to have very acurate and precise control over the gain. Furthermore, the inclusion of 4 XLR/Line inputs are a very nice touch! The H6 feels well made and is very well kitted out. The buttons are great quality and responsive. The menu screen is very well laid out and even has compression and EQ adjustments. The battery life is pretty good too - getting up to a decent 18-20 hours using 4 AA batteries. The H6's design is the most impressive feature, which is a great thing. You can really tell a lot of thought went into the design of this product. Nearly everything you could want on a recorder/mixer is on the H6. It's not too heavy, but feels solid and good quality. There is also a minimized chance of dropping the device, with its rubberized finish covering about 70% of the H6. This gives the device a very nice grip and also minimizes noise from handling it.

Cons:
All this said however, it's not perfect. The -20dB pads are not easy to get to, as they're way too close to the rotars. And the pre-amps (although amazing for a hand held recorder) are slightly harsh in my opinion. The compressor, accessible through the virtual menu, is also a little rough and not very easy to get to in a hurry.

Overall, the H6 is no doubt one of the best handheld recorders out there. It's amazing that this thing can handle up to six-track recording simultaneously, along with any kind of microphone from low to high quality dynamics or condensers. And the sound, although a tad bit edgy, is very impressive and is good quality. For short films, broadcast recording and documentaries, it is perfectly ideal and will not disappoint. The H6 is leagues ahead of its predecessors and most handheld recorder/mixers, and is honestly not too far away from the professional range of recorder/mixers. I still bring it on many projects and it's one of my favourite purchases. For it's price and quality, the H6 is terrific value. It comes highly recommended!

The PERFECT tool for any musician/sound guy

Elp0ulpo, 08.06.2018
When you open the box, you are presented with two capsules, an XY and a mid-side one as well as the body of the unit itself.

The build quality of the box isn't amazing, but will do just fine, even for repeated use in less than ideal conditions.

The XY mic :

is pretty good, you have the option of switching between a true stereo XY (90° angle) and 120° angle simply by rotating the two little mics on the head. The sound is very crisp, goes very low and very high, the stereo image is wide (even wider at 120°) and represents fairly accurately real world sound. It is just VERY sensitive to wind noises so make sure to put the foam on almost whatever you do.

The mid-side mic :

is my favorite, you can use it as mono or blend in the amount of side sound (essentially stereo) as much as you like, weather in the menu of the unit, or in your DAW if you select the "RAW" option for mid-side. The mic is very clean and crisp once again and is very useful for any field applications due to the mid-side.

The body of the H6 :

is very well built, as is the rest of the kit, even though a lot of it is plastic, it stays strong, even after a lot of abuse (going between movie sets and gigs got the little guy into some serious trouble, without aver affecting the performance)... It is powered either by miniUSB (not micro) or with 4 AA batteries (pretty long use out of 4 alcalines). The screen is bright enough for anything and can be adjusted, the controls on the surface are few but well engineered, which makes setting up a breeze. Only downside would be the gain adjustment knobs which can get bumped easily and tweaked by accident, but not too bad. Now, the 4 mic preamps in the H6 are very decent and can handle anything with their 48-12v phantom power and combo jack design, they have plenty of gain and are pretty quiet BUT I wouldn't record an album on them, they can sound a little bit harsh and seem to lack a little medium warmth to my taste (nothing you will ever notice unless you put them side by side with some nice studio stuff).

The software :

you can do EVERYTHING with the H6. Tuner ? Yes. Metronome ? Yes. Overdubs ? Yes. Beep at beginning of clip for syncing audio and video ? Yes. Integrated mixing capabilities with compressors, pan and volume ? Yes. The liste goes on and on and on, the possibilities are almost endless and the applications infinite. The menus are easily accessible and everything works well. I have honestly not been able to use EVERY functionality on this thing, but you could make an album with it, seriously, you will just find the lack of buttons a little bit tiring sometimes, but it is GREAT.

Pros :

+ Useful in almost any application (versatility)
+ Great sound
+ Great portability (small and light)
+ Strong build quality
+ AMAZING value, this thing should cost 1000 euros in my opinion

Cons :

- Handling noise when using the included mic units is pretty high
- Preamps are not amazing
- So many possibilities that you will never be able to use it all
- Battery indicator (3 bars) isn't accurate enough
- The gain knobs are easily bumped out of setting

Conclusion :

All in all, this is the Swiss army knife of recording tools, every musician or sound guy should have one in their arsenal. This thing saved my life on many occasions and it is reliable, you can use it for almost anything and it sounds really good. Like the H4n, but better, faster, stronger. You will love it, really :)
