Really decent piece of kit
Aleksei T., 08.12.2017
You would use this item for multi-track recording and mixing. Now, I will not comment on the mixing part, since I prefer to do it in the DAW. In fact, I also record to the DAW, so my review is a bit biased towards that particular use-case scenario.
Like with all Zoom products that I owned, the engineers seem to try to get every bit of performance from the device that they can. This is such a welcome policy! The R16 can operate as a stand-alone multitrack recorder, or as a USB sound card. As I mentioned, I use the second option, and it works great apart from a few minor complaints listed below.
First, I had trouble with the USB port; I connect the device to the PC via a sufficiently long cable. Many-a-time the device ended up in a restart cycle because of this. Fixed by using a more modern computer, though. The second problem---only two preamps with phantom power! This is one thing that cannot be fixed by software... But I guess this is mostly due to the power limitations. OK if you're only using a couple of overheads.
Meanwhile, sound quality-wise, there are no issues. Furthermore, the amazing thing is that the controls on the device also work as a DAW control surface! Extremely helpful, especially when you're at a distance from your PC and can't see the PC screen very well. Such a nice feature.
Overall, I'd say the device offers exceptional value for the money. Use-cases are of course geared towards home recording, or recording in the field, i.e., any kinds of amateur or semi-professional use. But don't get put off by this fact, though, if you can, get one! You will not be disappointed.

7 years later I'm still using it!
Hadrien Enlart, 11.01.2021
Of course it is not as good as some modern and more professional audio card, but the mackie control + the 8/16 I/O and the fact that it light and easily portable makes it something quite unique.

I wouldn't recommend this for people looking for pristine signal and precise monitoring though... it's nice for amateurs+++

Great recorder/interface
peters1224, 03.09.2020
Great device with a lot of different features. I mainly use the R16 as interface in my home studio setup. On the device, I mainly use the gain knobs and the send-return effect to add some reverb to the signal I'm recording. Great to have phantom power on two channels for the use of condenser mics. I also love playing around with the amp simulations when recording guitars or bass.

I have used the R16 a few times stand alone to record to the SD card. However, not using the mixing/mastering functions, I prefer to do these in my DAW. The display and menus are a bit limited but there are a lot of great features to be discovered in this very complete machine.

Unfortunately the housing and faders feel a bit 'plasticky'. It would be great if it had been made of metal and faders of higher quality. In practice, however, it functions well and I don't take it on the road very often.

Great 8-channel studio interface / mobile recorder for the price, would recommend!

Brilliant value and sound quality
Adrian99, 17.06.2013
I bought this studio to replace my old 16 track machine which was getting old. This was a fraction of the price of my old system but is actually much superior in sound quality and ease of use. The on-board condenser mics are great at this price point and I use them when recording acoustic guitar. The menus are easy to navigate and the whole system is intuitive and straightforward to use. Sending the sound files to laptop is a breeze with the included USB cable. I only have two minor issues with the system. Firstly the Zoom only came with a 2 pin plug so I needed to get a 3 pin adaptor (although these are cheap and readily available from most hardware shops). The other more pressing issue is that I found on my Zoom is that if you rename the sound files on your laptop when it is still connected to the Zoom (in card reader mode) when you next load the project you cannot play the sounds you renamed through the Zoom (but they are still there in card reader mode and are not deleted). Fortunately you can get around this by not renaming the original sound file names, but you will have to remember which file is which! I'm not sure if this issue is limited to only my Zoom. This is only a minor problem and should not detract from the fact that overall this is a superb bit of kit and brilliant value for money with superb sound quality.
