THE reference for headphones

The beyerdynamic DT 770 M is a dynamic, closed-back headset with an 80-ohm impedance rating for tracking and monitoring applications, and it has been a firm fixture of studios across the world since it was released. It provides a good impulse response and outstandingly detailed sound, but to do this it should ideally be paired with a headphone amplifier and is therefore an ideal candidate for studio use. This model is likely to be somewhat limited in terms of volume when combined with smartphones (the 32-ohm variant provides a better alternative here).

Quality made in Germany

The beyerdynamic DT 770 M is an over-ear headset, but thanks to its soft, replaceable synthetic leather ear pads, both a secure fit and a high level of comfort are ensured even during extended use. It features a single cable connection on the left side, which means it can be put on and taken off frequently without getting caught up in the cable, while the robust spring steel headband with its soft padding also makes for excellent durability. And in keeping with beyerdynamic’s constant commitment to quality, the DT 770 has always been hand-built in Germany.

A studio legend

The DT 770 is the closed-back model in beyerdynamic’s DT range, which comprises the DT 770, 880, and 990 Pro models, and it offers both maximum flexibility and a detailed sound. The M model is designed with a particular focus on shutting out ambient noise, which makes it a popular choice for monitoring applications in the studio and even for drummers. The DT 770 M accurately reproduces the entire frequency range, lending power and precision to the low end while also delivering clarity and detail in the treble range. The mid frequencies are not 100% linear, however (after all, that would be a little too much to ask at this price point). In addition to studio applications, the DT 770 M’s frequency response is also ideal for simply listening to music, which makes it a great choice as a hi-fi headset.

About beyerdynamic

beyerdynamic was founded in Berlin in 1924 as a manufacturer of cinema loudspeakers. In 1937, Eugen Beyer developed the DT 48, the first set of dynamic headphones, followed two years later by the M 19 dynamic microphone. After the Second World War, the company moved to Heilbronn, Germany, and now also has a US subsidiary with headquarters in Farmingdale, New York. Beyerdynamic's most popular products traditionally include headphones and microphones for both live and studio use, and the company also has a strong presence in the consumer and conference technology sectors as well as in the field of installation microphones, interpreter consoles, and tour guide systems.

The total package

The beyerdynamic DT 770 M comes complete with a three-metre straight cable with a soldered 3.5 mm mini-jack, and the cable can be replaced with a little bit of technical prowess. All of the other components (particularly the ear pads) are also replaceable, and the scope of delivery additionally includes a screw-threaded 6.3 mm jack adapter and a drawstring pouch with a transparent label field. At just 354 grams (including the cable), the DT 770 M is astonishingly light despite its robust construction, and that means it can be worn without “fatigue” setting in during long studio sessions.

Quality built, but isolation subjectively not as good as specs suggest.

Looking for affordable monitoring headphones ("cans") for studio tracking, I compared Superlux HD660, Superlux HD665, t.bone HD 990D, Vic Firth SiH2 and Beyerdynamic DT-770M to each other and to my DT-770 pro 80. I know, not a really fair reference, but my idea was to seek for a series of cans that would not cost more, indeed preferably less than my DT-770 and still would have proper, useful sound quality. From the models selected, you can guess that acoustic isolation was also a desirable feature, to prevent the sound from the cans bleeding into e.g. a singer's mic and thus saving me time cleaning up tracks from this bleed. That is why I also searched among headphones dedicated to drummers. I will review all of the models mentioned, each in their own product page. Here we go for the DT-770M

Although a little more expensive than the DT-770 pro, I felt I had to incorporate the "M" into my comparison, as it is recommended as headphones for drummers with high acoustic isolation - remember my desire for bleeding prevention. From Beyerdynamic I expect quality construction and high comfort of wearing - and that is both what you get from the "M", too. From an earlier comparison I did a few years ago in store at Thomann's in Treppendorf (great experience by the way!), I already knew that the "M" sounds dull compared to its "pro" counterpart (see their specs also), so that was no surprise for me, but also compared to the HD665 that I tested this time together with the "M" and other models mentioned. Although its claimed isolation of 35dBA was the highest I could find in the specs of the models tested (or actually any model), in real life I found the "M" to be it just a little bit quieter than the DT-770 and other models tested, and by far not as quiet as the HD665. Add to that its higher price and you can guess that I consider the "M" not suitable for my purpose.

The only pair of headphones you’ll ever need!
So comfortable! - Even comfortable for long periods of time, I don’t noice I’m wearing them. I am a glasses wearer so having headphones that are comfortable to wear with my glasses on is an necessity, and these headphones are so comfortable for wearing with glasses!
So clear and crisp audio - with no fake base like you get with lower end products!
The noise cancelling is amazing - even one there no plugged into my headphone, The are like ear defenders, I can’t hear a thing which is brilliant!
The in line volume control is a great feature which work exceptionally!
Would recommend them to anyone as the only headphones you should get!

Love these headphones so much!

e
Nice quality, but lacking in low end isolation
eddiehimself 29.12.2018
I used to play the acoustic drums so I know the value of a great isolating pair of headphones. These certainly do isolate very well for the most part, but sadly they're lacking in low end isolation, which is a real disappointment. I think if I was using these in a practice or live scenario with a loud bass amp I would have to use earplugs as well to dampen down those lower frequencies. As far as taking these out day to day to listen to music, they certainly do a good job on that front. Being 80 ohms, they're just about loud enough to listen to music on my phone at full volume and block out all the sounds, except again the bass frequencies. I was on a turboprop flight behind a 2-year-old and while it mercifully blocked out any trace of toddler sound, there was no protection against the drone of the propellers, and no option to add earplugs because of the lack of volume. As far as the sound goes, these have a nice balance. Being closed back, they're always going to put pressure on your eardrums, but that's the price you have to pay for the isolation. But again there is a lack of the low end frequencies, which does exacerbate that lack of bass isolation. These are great quality headphones that feel really well put together, and they're very comfortable to wear for hours at a time. It's just a shame that they don't give that full-spectrum isolation I was looking for.

Had to buy 2nd ones!

For the money it's the best noise-cancelling phones you can get IMO. The sound quality is excellent and for my taste it's a major and serious tool for studio and training work with band.

You can play drums depending on the touch you're playing and still not become deaf. You can hear your playing and there is more bass freq than usually (compared to Shure iems) but it cancels most of the high and mid freqs.

Must buy item for a singer who wants a noise-cancellation when recording. Does not give you any freq too much and sound is averal neutral for vox recording.

Only minus is the quality for a HEAVY USER! My volume switch has taken some damage and I have changed the pads couple times.

Despite that. It a 9+ headphones that I can recommend.
