New sounds from Bob Reeves
Man from E8 21.07.2023
Bob Reeves does a few artist models, based on variations to their standard cups/throats/backbores/rims (JH, Zinger, CF). This new Boom* model has the (standard?) 43.5 rim, which facilitates precise slotting and crisp attacks. Otherwise it departs quite a long way from the Reeve standards. The cup seems to be a modified D funnel, the throat is opened up to 24 (?)(the D cup is normally 26) and the backbore is presumably also modified from perhaps the 69. In effect, it is a new design. It blows very freely (although it is much more stable than the JH, which also blow freely) and the sound is very full and beautiful. It would suit very well for modern jazz or solo work, especially modern music. It should also work for orchestra although the sound profile may stand out from the benchmark Bach 1 1/2. It is a less obvious fit for big band, funk etc, which are usually associated with tighter throats and backbores and shallower bowl cups. But that is an individual choice.
Despite or because of the free blowing character it is remarkably easy to play flexibly across wide intervals and across the normal range.
There is an earlier version of the Boom mouthpiece available from Reeves. It has a tighter blow and comes standard with a 6C rim - you can in fact order it with any Reeves rim, although I have found the swapping the rim on the new Boom* has quite a pronounced impact on the sound and playing characteristics.
This is a very nice new mouthpiece.

Außergewöhnliche Ansprache
Fritz4394 16.03.2024
