The third generation of the Scarlett 2

The Focusrite Scarlett 2i2, now in its third edition, is a high-quality compact USB audio interface for Mac and PC. It features two combined XLR/jack inputs for connecting microphones as well as synthesizers or other line-level audio sources and two balanced outputs for monitoring. The 2i2 is equipped with two high-grade Scarlett microphone preamps with switchable 48 V phantom power, as well as the brand-new Air Mode. Electric guitars and basses can also be plugged in directly, as the input impedance of the front sockets can be set to Hi-Z. The Scarlett 2i2 Studio Bundle also includes a CM25 MkIII condenser microphone, a pair of HP60 MkIII headphones, and a three-metre XLR cable: An unbeatable complete package at a budget-friendly price.

Love is in the “Air”

Focusrite’s outstanding reputation for building high-quality mic preamps has been established for over three decades now, and much of this expertise has been included in the third generation of Scarlett interfaces via the brand-new integrated Air Mode, which when selected opens up and brightens the high end in a way that is intended to emulate their classic ISA preamps – or, as the British manufacturer puts it, to provide “unique high-end detail for vocals and acoustic guitar”. Decades of experience really do speak for quality in this case, and the AD/DA converters provide optimum clarity and detail with a maximum bit depth of 24 bits and frequency rates of up to 192 kHz.

Dynamic duo

The Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 is a compact desktop interface and is therefore particularly suited to home and bedroom studios, in addition to which the studio bundle includes everything you need for your first recording sessions. It is also USB-powered and sturdily built, yet lightweight and portable. The flexible and versatile inputs, coupled with the two outputs (ideal for active monitors), should be fit for any purpose. Unlike the larger members of the Scarlett series, the 2i2 lacks MIDI connectivity. This should not pose too much of a problem, however, since most modern keyboards feature a USB interface as standard and can thus be connected directly to the computer.

About Focusrite

Founded in 1985 by Rupert Neve, Focusrite quickly made a name for itself with high-quality analogue consoles. Today, the company markets audio interfaces, mic preamps, consoles, analogue EQs, and channel strips as well as hardware and software for digital audio processing. The company is based in High Wycombe, England, and has won numerous industry awards. In addition to the Focusrite Pro line, the company also has subsidiaries that include Adam Audio, Novation, and iOS app creator Ampify Music.

Get started right away

The newly designed “gain halos” (the red and green LED rings around the gain controls on the front panel) are intended to make it easier to adjust gain settings, so that budding producers can start recording immediately after buying the interface. To make things simpler still, Focusrite has included a “Quick Start Tool” and put together an impressive and comprehensive package of free software, some in the box and some available for download, which includes Ableton Live Lite, Pro Tools First, Focusrite Red Plugin Suite, Focusrite Plugin Collective, Softube Time and Tone Bundle, a three-month subscription to Splice Sounds, and a software tool of four XLN Audio Addictive Keys of your choice.

In the spotlight: Solo, 2i2, 4i4, 8i6, 18i8, and 18i20

The third generation of Scarlett interfaces comprises the Solo, 2i2, 4i4, 8i6, 18i8, and 18i20 as well as two bundles, the Solo Studio and 2i2 Studio, each of which includes a microphone and headphones. The abbreviations 2i2, 4i4, etc. specify the number of inputs and outputs. In other words, “2i2” stands for two (i)nputs and two outputs, and 4i4 accordingly stands for four (i)nputs and four outputs. The “Solo” bends the rules in this respect, since it actually features two inputs and two outputs – the name instead suggests that it is intended for solo artists or singer/songwriters.

C
Perfect to use in a small recording studio setup
CoJR 22.04.2020
I bought the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 Studio 3rd Gen package last year after wanting to return to music production at home for some time. This package has been perfect for all of my needs in recording vocals, guitars and keyboards. All of the components included are of a high calibre when comparing to other recording equipment I have bought separately in the past.

The audio interface is compact and well designed with several nice features, such as the glowing halo rings around the input gain knobs. The condenser microphone is of a perfect weight and size for a home studio setup, and the headphones are quite comfortable to wear. All of these components produce pristine quality, which in my opinion for the cost makes this package very competitive.

Thomann did a great job delivering the package to my apartment on time. When combined with a computer/laptop, a set of studio monitors and the relevant instruments for recording, this bundle is perfect for musicians across all skill levels recording at home or on the road.

R
Solid product
Radioz 02.05.2020
I purchased it for home studio but also to take it with me.

Product has a solid build quality. Metallic casing is good although I would like to have a solution to protect knobs better. No wobbling dials and choice of materials gives a premium feel. All the necessary cables to start working are included. Mac OS X Catalina recognised it without any additional drivers.

Headphones are good enough for most users, although I believe that some users might find them too tight. Sound is perfect for me.

Included microphone and headphones makes this product a real good choice for most mini studios.

W
Excellent package for the price
Wrench 21.09.2020
The interface is well known for being among the best budget interfaces for the money. I cannot yet comment on the "air" feature as I have not used the mic for anything beyond conference calls and test recordings which sounded crisp, clean, and fairly balanced. The mic could definitely use a pop filter though (I am using a t.bone MS60 & SSM6 on a flexible mount which work perfectly with this mic).

My only real gripe about this package is that the headset is an on-ear VS an over-ear set which would be a lot more comfortable for longer hours of use. I cannot stand keeping the headphones on for longer than 20 min stretches as my ears get really painful. I am going to try different types of earpads to see if a conversion to over-ear is possible simply by changing the earpads. Otherwise, this is an extremely versatile and solid package.

Another major improvement over my old 2nd gen Scarlett Solo is the balanced output feature. I could hear a lot of PC and EMI noise from my old Solo which is now completely eliminated with the balanced output.

Happy camper!

K
Very good
KarlC 20.03.2021
This is a great product. The first one was faulty, worked now and again, just wouldn't be recognised by the USB. Focusrite support were helpful as were Thomann who kindly replaced the unit without delay. I'm the idiot who tried to get what is essentially a plug in and go package working for a week. I think i got lucky as more came in to stock. The replacement works a dream. It arrived today.

The unit records vocals and guitar very well. The mike is decent as are the headphones. They are worth the extra money for the full set over just getting the soundcard.

I imagine this would also be perfect for podcasting or zoom etc.

Remember to buy leads for your speakers, stand for the mike, accessories etc
