Lounsberry Pedals Tall, Fat & Wide

I have a Minimoog Voyager, which is an absolutely marvellous instrument, but it is lacking overdrive feature that is included in e.g. Moog Little Phatty. I bought this pedal after seeing a YouTube video of Tall, Fat & Wide used with Moog Voyager. I first considered Elektro-Harmonix Operation Overlord pedal. About Operation Overlord, it has been said that it's EQ response is good for electric piano and organs, but not for synths. Now after several hours of experimenting with Tall, Fat & Wide, I have to say that it I can totally recommend it for this kind of use. The pedal might be meant for organs, but it adds the missing edge for synthesizer sounds also. The sonic response is clear and good both on bass synth sounds and lead sounds. You have to adjust the levels carefully to avoid clipping and with too high gain, the pedal can also amplify characteristics of synth sound quite heavily. By this I mean for example the "vibrating sound" that may occur if the oscillators use different waveforms. But dialing adequate and musical settings is super easy. The pedal is also an absolute beauty. In the package, there were no instructions included, but they can be read at Lounsberry's web page. From the instructions, It is quite hard to understand connection options other than normal stereo operation.

Using a good power supply is essential with this pedal in order not to get extra noise. In my setup the pedal was quite noisy when using multi-chain 1 Spot. Using a proper isolated power supply removed the problem.

The primary goal of the product might be to get better sound in the clonewheel Hammond setups. I haven't tried that. Probably this pedal is excellent in that use, too. For Hammond overdrive you should also remember Tube Amp Manufaktur Organ Drive, that has a real two-channel tube preamp and is also able to provide really distorted sounds in addition to nice tube warmness on the clean channel.

Der Lounsberry Tall, Fat & Wide ist sehr leicht, fühlt sich wertig an, kommt mit bereits einbauter 9 V-Batterie (die man einfach ausbauen kann) und klingt erstaunlich gut. Sollte man auf den Batterie-Betrieb verzichten wollen, benötigt das Pedal eine Stromversorgung mit 100 mA und 9 V (Polarität: minus innen). Um zu verzerren, ist ein ausreichend hohes Eingangssignal erforderlich. Wenn dann die Verzerrung einsetzt, hört es sich an, als ob man einen guten Röhrenamp aus den 60ern spielen würde. Der Sound ist deutlich präsenter, auch wenn man clean spielt, und das ist vielleicht sogar die beste Eigenschaft, die ein Vorverstärker haben kann. Man kann den TF&W problemlos an ein Mischpult bzw. eine PA anschließen. Sollte man eine Orgel mit eingebautem Leslie-Simulator besitzen, ist allerdings darauf zu achten, dass ein Effekt-Einschleifweg vorhanden ist, sodass der TF&W vor dem Leslie-Effekt in der Signalkette liegt (dahinter klingt weder der TF&W, noch sonst irgendein Vorverstärker wirklich gut). Auch wenn man z.B. den Neo Instruments Ventilator hat, sollte man zuerst mono in den TF&W gehen und dann weiter in den Ventilator und nicht umgekehrt. Damit entfällt der Stereo-Betrieb für Orgeln meines Erachtens nach gänzlich, was aber nicht heißt, dass man auf den Stereo-Modus komplett verzichten muss. Mir gefällt der TF&W auch in Verbindung mit E-Piano- oder Synthesizer-Sounds (insbesondere dem Minimoog) sehr gut. Wer allerdings einen Vorverstärker für seine Orgel sucht, dem empfehle ich die deutlich günstigere Mono-Variante Tall & Fat.
