Thomann MK IV Handmade Alto Sax

Thomann MK IV ALTO SAX review This is a heck of an instrument for the price tag! It sounds and feels great and after taking a drop today I can vouch for its robust design. It feels like a Selmer MK VI having been clearly designed based on that most famous of models. Having played a Selmer Super Action for a long time and before that the Yamaha Custom Z 82 before that I can't fault this instrument. I am a professional woodwind instrumentalist based in Dublin, Ireland. I play a C* mouthpiece with a variety of reeds depending on the nature of the engagement (Van doren 3 or Legere 3 1/2). I like a dark sound and find I am able to achieve this effectively with this instrument. I had bought the tenor MK IV first and play on a Otto Link 9* with a variety of soft reeds. Again I'm loving the dark sound with these vintage copies, twinned with modern action and Thomann strength.

This sax is a big step up from my old one. Not only does it look lovely, getting out those low notes doesn't require every ounce of breath in my body! The only reason I put quality as 4 stars is because I noticed condensation likes to drip out of the G# and F keys (when the room is on the cooler side) however that doesn't affect the sound at all. Overall I'm pleased with my purchase and would very much recommend.

I've been trying saxophones and have been looking for good/playable/affordable models until I saw this one on the Thomann website. I was skeptical about the reviews, but decide to give it a chance.

The 20+ 5 star reviews about this saxophone don't lie. It's really a quality instrument. I think the biggest factor is that it's definitely handmade, maybe in Asia or anywhere, but the quality at this price point is really worth it every penny.

Don't stick to cheap student models, this instrument is properly tuned and inspected. I've tried the Jupiter JAS700Q and a Startone Sax and I didn't get the satisfaction out of it, also found it a bit of a trouble to get the tuning and some notes correct.

The keys, sound and design are top notch.

If you want an instrument that will last for years and doesn't have defects, I think this is your best choice. I feel very motivated to play every day on this saxophone. It has the sound of a Selmer, but not the price. A good mouth piece is also a recommendation. Good luck on your saxophone journey.

Dieses Saxophon ist ein wirklich tolles Instrument. Die Verarbeitung ist sehr gut. Die Klappen haben einen angenehmen Widerstand und liegen gut erreichbar. Natürlich ist das Sax - wie die meisten anderen auch - deutlich orientiert am Selmer Mark VI und stellenweise auch am Selmer Mark VII bzw. SA. Wer diese Selmer-Modelle vom Handling her mag, der sollte mal einen Blick auf das Thomann MK IV riskieren. Ihr werdet überrascht sein.

Der hohe Kupferanteil des Korpus sorgt grundsätzlich für einen etwas wärmeren und gedeckteren Klang im Vergleich zu anderen Legierungen. Über Sound und Ansprache kann man aber natürlich keine allgemeingültigen Aussagen machen, weil das stark von dem verwendeten Mundstück, dem Blättchen und nicht zuletzt vom Spiel des Saxophonisten abhängt. Mit der richtigen Kombination, die bei jedem Spieler ein wenig anders sein kann, wird jedenfalls beides perfekt.

Zwei Dinge könnte man - wenn man ganz pingelig ist - als nachteilig bewerten:
1.) Das mitgelieferte Mundstück ist möglicherweise schwierig zu spielen. Die Bahnbreite ist eher eng. Ich empfehle jedem, der das Instrument testet, auch ein Mundstück mit breiterer Bahn auszuprobieren. Natürlich hängt auch das wieder vom Spieler ab. Wenn es nicht auf Anhieb das gewünschte Ergebnis gibt, probiert andere Munstücke und natürlich Blättchen aus. Das ist ein Anfängertipp, ich weiß!
2.) Das Saxophon ist für ein Alt recht schwer. Dafür kriegt man allerdings eine top Verarbeitung und eine hochwertige Legierung.

Ich habe die beiden gerade erwähnten Punkte nicht negativ in meine Bewertung einfließen lassen, weil es jedem Saxophonisten klar ist, dass mitgelieferte Mundstücke immer irgendwo ein Kompromiss sind und man sein eigenes passendes Mundstück aussuchen muss und natürlich, weil man ein höheres Gewicht, das aus einem hochwertigen Material resultiert, nicht negativ bewerten sollte. Das wäre ziemlich unfair.

Ich habe das Saxophon drei Profis aus der Region zum Testen gegeben, um ihre Meinung zu erfahren. Alle drei waren begeistert. Ich empfehle jedem, der die Möglichkeit und das Interesse hat, zu Thomann zu fahren und das Saxophon auszuprobieren.

Zuletzt möchte ich noch Folgendes betonen: Meine sehr gute Bewertung basiert nicht auf dem geringen Preis des Instruments! Das Saxophon ist einfach sehr gut und das nicht nur, weil es verhältnismäßig günstig ist. Achtet z.B. auf bestimmte Verarbeitungsdetails. Doppelverstrebungen an großen Klappen sind eines von vielen Qualitätsmerkmalen. Sie verhindern sehr viel besser, dass sich die großen Klappen verbiegen und dann eventuell nicht mehr richtig schließen.

Ich bitte Thomann, mit genau dieser Qualität und diesem Anspruch an Saxophone weiter zu machen. Ich bin mir absolut sicher, dass man dann künftig immer mehr Leute sehen wird, die Thomann spielen. Wenn mein nächstes Saxophon fällig wird, werde ich mir das MK IV Tenor auf jeden Fall ansehen.
