12AY7 Double Triode
I got these to replace 12AX7's and deliberately reduce the gain in my amp. 12AX7's have a Mu (Gain) of 100. 12AY7's have a Mu (Gain) of 43.75. 12AT7's have a Mu (Gain) of 60.5. 12AU7's have a Mu (Gain) of 16.94. It is very simple to unplug any of these and substitute them. I chose the second lowest gain because the amp was really over doing the distortion for the sound I want. There is nothing wrong with the amp, or the tubes. Replacing V1, the first valve, has the most dramatic effect. It all comes down to the sound each of us likes best! It's quite easy to put back the originals if you don't like the sound.

Perfect for lowering the input gain in tube amps
I have used this tube to replace a 12ax7 in the input stage of a tube amp and, as a result, obtained a more clearer and distortion free sound. Ever been unsatisfied with the grinding sound of your amp, never being able to get a true clean rithm sound? Well, a 12ay7 may be the solution! It worked with my amp.

Sounds good
Nothing much to say. Sounds good in my V1 of Egnater Tweaker 15 head into a Jensen Blackbird. I play singlecoils. Shimmer is there but then again I also had it with the 12AX7. This AY7 maybe is a bit less agressive, a bit more round, not as hard.

Bought two, one doesn't work
The working one is great, gave my cub12 a whole new life, now when cranked gives this sweet creamy rich crunch, love it.
The other one I tried to put it in my champ clone, but the thing didn't start at all, no light, no sound, nothing. What a bum.

Low gain, high quality
This is a low gain tube which I got for experimenting with gain structures on the Hot Rod Deluxe. I had it in the V1 position where it drastically changes and lowers the gain structure - good if you're looking for a very clean channel. It's not one that's very commonly used, but it has its uses in specific applications.

Ideal for clean sound
I have change original TUBE V1 in my Bugera 20 W head with 12AY7.
Now i get completely diferent color of amlifire and sounds like much more expensive amps. I am using Celestion G12 V-Type 16 Ohm speaker.
Les drvie with more warmht, ideal for my style of music

Great.
EH are choosing their tubes well...bought this to swap in and out of a Champ 600 and it sounds really good as a low-gain option plus has lasted well....

Lower gain V1
Used to replace V1 12ax7 in a Vox AC4 to increase clean headroom/reduce gain levels. I still get plenty of growl, but can keep the signal cleaner to higher volume levels where the 12ax7 went into overdrive rather too early.
A rounder, cleaner sound still with bite on initial pick attack is what I was after, and that's what I got. The amp now blooms into full chords with lots of lovely chime, but still barks with authority when the gain is cranked.
If you find the gain a bit fierce, try subbing a 12ay7 into your V1.

Wonderful tubes
I have switched the preamp 12AX7 stock tubes of my Fender Blues Deluxe Reissue with these. I play a lot of clean and these sound warm and rounded. I am really in love with how they sound.
