Don't hesitate, this is a really good bass
PBarr 03.03.2022
Can you gig this bass? I am
clip above is the DI track from the digital desk at the venue, I've even left my playing mistakes and lax timing in. I was playing in passive mode with the blend centred, bass boosted and a slight cut on treble. That's right you can still boost the bass and cut the treble in passive mode. This is a fairly unique feature I feel.

I'm happy with the 5th (B) string in particular, listen to the clip, those low Cs and Ds really thunder, especially in the flesh through a decent amp. The B doesn't feel floppy.

As expected with dual buckers it's silent when you are not playing, no humming. I was pleasently suprised to see that the bass is also shielded at the factory too. Likewise everything has been grounded correctly too, I can touch the pickups and all other screw heads and fittings with no buzzing.

The tuning pegs keep the guitar in tune. I transport this bass in a soft gig bag and it's virtually always still in tune when I get it back out of the case.

I set this bass up to my liking with plenty of play left in the adjustments. I use plectrums as I don't have feeler gauges. I set the truss rod so I can just about get a 0.5mm under the 7th fret when the first fret is capoed and I fret the last fret (this is neck relief for those new to guitar setups). I set the action at the 12th fret to about 1.4mm (G string) to 2.1mm (B string). No annoying buzzes if I play lightly, I can get that fret buzz when digging in for rock and when slapping though. Access right up to the last fret isn't an issue. No neck dive to speak of really.

Cons: price considered there arn't really any to write home about. The neck pocket could be a little tighter, this is a visual thing though and I suspect it doesn't effect the tone much if at all. The blend knob isn't the nice 3 way smooth blend you might expect, it very much acts as a 3 way switch, don't expect to experiment with 25% neck PU and 75% bridge. It's either 100% neck, 50:50 or 100% bridge. This isn't a bad thing though. The 3 sounds are great especially when used with bass and treble EQ controls.

This has become my main player. It's light, easy to play and versatile. I also don't worry about leaving it in my car or unsupervised at the venue. All I needed to do was swap the strings (I use Dunlop Birght Nickels 45-125). You might get the odd person sneer because it's a no-name brand. Just wow them with your playing and groove and they'll come around.

DL
Amazing quality for the price
Daniele Lupo 31.03.2018
I bought this bass as I am building my own small studio at home, and I obviously want to be able to record whatever without depending on nothing or anybody whenever I want to.
The bass came perfectly packed, ordered on Thursday/Friday (can't remember exactly) and was at my place by Monday, amazing as always.

In general the quality of the build was almost perfect, only 2 small imperfections:
1. The jack plate wasn't perfectly centered on the side of the body, risulting in the plate itself popping out of a mm or 2 from the top of the body.
2. The fretboard was rather dry, and you could clearly feel it by touch and just by looking at it.
It has to be said that these are details that do not compromise the sound of the instrument in any way whatsoever, therefore I didn't and still don't care.
Especially considered the fact that everything else, such as the finish of the body, frets and related edges, neck finish, pickup alignment, headstock design, all absolutely perfect, completely spot on.

Furthermore the instrument feels extremely balanced and comfortable, not too heavy at all, and very very nice to play with a great sustain I must say.

Once hooked up to an amp, the sound is very pleasant, full and rich in dynamics. The different controls give a great aid in shaping the sound according to one's liking, and allow the instrument to be played in several genres of music, from metal to blues, rock, pop, maybe even jazz.

I must say I am totally blown away by this instrument, considering what I have paid for it, and considering that for any other brand, to get something that sounds like this, I would have had to spend at least 3 times the price.

Definitely recommended to anyone who needs a great bass and is on a budget, or to any player looking to approach a 5 string for the first time.

A
Good budget bass - after modifications
Anonymous 21.06.2015
I?ve been a bass player for many years but have always stuck to ?name? brands (Precision, Gibson Thunderbird, Rickenbacker etc).

Having never played 5-string I didn?t want to spend loads of money on something I may not take to, so thought this bass was cheap enough to try.

I am not going to go into great detail about this bass as most of the relevant points have been made by Howard who reviewed the black version, but some points are worth expanding on.

Firstly, on initial connection, the sound was very distorted and scratchy until I found that all the controls were loose. The strings are not very good, but this is easily remedied. The biggest flaw is the battery ? as has been said elsewhere, the battery is always live even with the jack cable removed. This is because the active circuitry needs to be earthed. However, the solution is easier than fitting a toggle switch. On removing the back plate, I found that the negative side of the battery was connected to the jack socket as normal. I also found that the earth lead (yellow in my case) from the active circuitry was also connected to the socket. A little solder work to remove the yellow cable from the socket and connect it to the earth side of the volume pot fixed the problem in 2 minutes.

On the plus side the bass is a comfortable weight and well distributed (although I?m not particularly keen on the quirky chamfered body shape). I also like the idea of the push/pull volume pot to switch between active and passive ? although, if there was some LED indication of battery state you would never need to go passive!

All in all, this is a very usable bass after some modifications and I consider it to be reasonable value for money.

Perfect and versatile, for a first own bass ever
Gorkid 23.01.2022
Borrowed a Cort p-bass from a friend and after two weeks I understood that I need more... More strings, more settings, more of this deep 'brrrang' of the 5th, more knobs lol. Humbuckers babyyy!
Active preamp - d o u b l e nice.

Arrived safely (hint: order a gigbag and UPS packs in extra box that becomes a buffer between sharp objects and steel toed boots at the warehouse).

Frets are not cutting-edge grade but can do with a little filing.
Visible (from a certain point of view) gap between body and the neck, so no, they do build them good but not hand-made-with-big-love type.

Using via DI to PC to play with effects while learning but expect it to sound even better on a real amp.

If you are new to bass - not a big hit to your wallet at all, no sir/madam/whatever.

Oh and deluxe gigbag by Thomann - 5x times cheaper than similar thing you can buy from local stores and equally adequate. Plenty of room for exxtras.

If you are still thinking - get it, Thomann got you covered if anything goes wrong, high five for that, you guys.

B
Harley Benton B-550 - Modern Measure
Bruno4358 03.04.2014
When I bought this bass, I was stricken by the lightness of the body, it's weight is incomparable to any other 5 string I played before, plus, it has no neck-dive whatsoever, and the way it's thin neck is carved makes a combo of both comfort and playability without question.
From cleaner tones to heavier ones, this bass delivers a rich tone much due to it's peculiar humbuckers and active electronics. The hardware is very well crafted, adding to the instrument's overall positive playing experience.
The price, as far as all the features go on the Harley Benton B-550 when compared to similar instruments, is so low, that when I first bought it I was afraid I was making a mistake, clearly, that wasn't the case, as you surely realised right from the start of this text.

I used it in several gigs, rehearsals and home playing, and to add to the features I noted above, I must also refer to the tuning stability, that surprised not only me, but also my band members, especially when I didn't worry to tune this instrument before betting on stage.

Unfortunately, I already dropped it twice, once, because I knocked it over my workstation while changing strings, and again when I used an old gig-bag I had laying around and it ripped from the seam when I was getting down the stairs from my apartment, and to my surprise (again) I only dinged it slightly on the headstock the second time it fell, just a tiny scratch and a minor ding, but it did fell down a flight of stairs and landed strings down. It didn't even bent the neck or set it out of tune.

I encourage everyone to try out one of these, they are amazing!

Brutal purchase
OLFOX 20.12.2021
Not a single complaint on this one. Bought it as my first bass. It came neatly packed with all the bits and screws, not a single scratch. Playability is amazing too,the neck is smooth, the fingerboard is smooth, there are small fret filing mistakes but no harm whatsoever. Highly recommend!

TT
Fantastic instrument
Tsvetan Tsvetkov 18.11.2021
It's amazing what you can get for close to no money. This instrument is absolutely fantastic and has no analog at this price point. It came in tune and set up from the Thomann facility. The only issue I had was with the 1st fret on the 5th string. It was mostly buzzing with no tone, but after a quick setup it's absolutely perfect.

P
A fine guitar.
Paul1800 09.03.2015
I have been playing bass for nearly 40 years now and I have owned many different types and makes but this guitar is my first foray into the world of 5 strings.
Because of that, and viewing the purchase as a bit of an experiment, I didn't want to spend to much of my cash on a flashy beast and then find that I didn't like it or couldn't get on with it for one reason or another. When that has happened in the past I've finished up giving the guitar to one of my sons. Thus price was a major factor in my choice, and, having bought much from Thomann in the past, but never a Harley-Benton, decided that at €145 I wouldn't loose to much.I wonder why the black one is cheaper though?
I have to say I'm astonished by the quality and playability of this instrument for the money.Build is extremely good, a flattish and very playable neck profile with an angled headstock, light body with a high gloss white finish and good quality fittings in black. Obviously, for the price it's not perfect, one or two little flaws like the routing round the control cavity plate is a bit raggy, but that's on the back anyway. The battery is included and a couple of Allen keys for truss rod and bridge saddles.Neither were needed. Unbelievably it was in tune when I unpacked it, and, having smallish hands I like a low action and this was absolutely perfect for me straight out of the box, that's never ever happened before, even with guitars costing lots more dosh. I don't think the action could go much lower and the guitar remain playable, right first time! d'Addario strings are standard as well. (Not my favourite gauge but you can't have it all at this price). I plugged it into the old Orange valve amp set flat and it just exploded into life, warm growly lows through to toppy funky sounds are all available once you've worked out which of the four knobs does what. Some sort of leaflet would help here, just a suggestion. Gigwise it was completely reliable and did what it had to very well, though I had to change the battery for a better quality one after I left it plugged in and it went a bit flat. (Again, the leaflet would help to avoid this mistake).
It's very playable, very affordable, unpretentious, attractive and well worth the money.Whatever your sound I think you'll find it here. I'm absolutely delighted with it, I might buy a black one as well.

Not quite happy
Tuncy 07.05.2020
It looks nice, and packed with lots of features.
Frets are ok, and finished nicely.

The first thing I noticed is, It eats the battery so fast (2 weeks with minimum playing and its done, finished). Some people commented that it can be fixed with some simple soldering. I never tried it. I hope they fix it for the newer generation models.

I had to do a truss rod and action adjustment. First of all I couldnt get it done, because the truss rod wasnt working. I will return it as soon as the coronavirus lockdown ends.
I intended to use it for my recordings, but with that truss rod issue, its not fun to play.
