Heavy sounds without the heavy price tag

Harley Benton Extreme-76 BK Classic Series electric guitar

The Harley Benton Extreme-76 BK combines a distinctive, angular EX-style body and a pair of classic humbuckers with ceramic magnets to create a bold-looking electric guitar that is virtually predestined for Hard Rock and Metal music and gives players a palette of heavy sounds at a highly affordable price. As well as being an instant eye-catcher thanks to its glossy black finish, the Extreme-76 is also highly reliable due to its sturdy build quality, while the comfortable C-profile neck means that it is also an ideal choice for beginners diving into the heavier musical genres for the first time. Despite the modest price tag, however, Harley Benton has also not cut any corners when it comes to the hardware, and the Extreme-76 BK thus features a Tune-o-Matic bridge, a stopbar tailpiece, and a set of rugged machine heads that are sure to keep everything running smoothly.

Built for power

Harley Benton has chosen okoume (also known as Gabon mahogany) for the body of the Extreme-76 BK Classic Series and maple for the neck, giving the guitar a powerful sound with plenty of punch, while the 22-fret fingerboard, which is made from roseacer (heat-treated maple that imitates the look and feel of rosewood), features jumbo frets for a smooth playing feel. The two humbuckers in turn are governed by a simple but effective control layout comprising a dedicated volume control for each pickup, a master tone control, and a three-way toggle switch that lets guitarists move effortlessly between the tight, chunky sound of the bridge pickup and the smooth, buttery sound of the neck pickup - or dial in their favourite in-between sounds for clean, rhythm, and lead using both pickups.

Got Metal?

Those just starting out on an instrument usually have only a limited budget at their disposal, and budding electric guitarists are no exception. However, that doesn't mean they should have to make do with an instrument that is anything less than well-built and authentic-sounding - and of course iconic looks are a must. Luckily, Harley Benton has designed the Extreme-76 BK Classic Series to tick all of these boxes and give players taking their first steps in the world of Hard Rock and Metal a solid foundation at an affordable price. At the same time, more advanced players looking for a high-quality and reliable second guitar to serve as a backup for performances, rehearsals, or simply for jamming at home that won't break the bank (or the owner's heart if the guitar picks up a few dents and scratches) should also take a look at the Harley Benton Extreme-76 BK.

Best EX that I know of for the money
Dusty Graves 17.12.2021
I've had this guitar for over a month now and it's very nice. The body seems to be a tiny bit smaller than the Gibby and Epi version which, to me, is even better than those higher priced blocks of wood. I like the body and headstock, the neck feels a bit thick but that was expected. Most likely layered with poly paint so it ends up thicker than it should be but not a big deal unless you absolutely need a thin neck. The frets are nicely mounted but initially the strings would grind a bit when bending. The tuners were ok, no problems noted. The pickups seem pretty good. I have no desire to change them at this time. No extraneous feedback or nasty noises and they sound good. No noticeable problems with the controls/switch other than one knob being pushed in a bit initially (probably from shipping) that I simply pulled up away from the body now it's smooth. Bridge and tailpiece are fine other than an imperfectly drilled hole for tailpiece but there's no wiggle and it's tight so I'm good with it. Nut is cut well and action is nice.

What I've done to it: Changed to locking tuners. Moved the front strap holder to the back near where the neck meets the body. Added wheel weights to the backplate/cavity cover. Got a thick leather strap. All of this helped the neck dive that it initially had and which was made worse by the added locking tuners. Now it's much more comfortable and considerably less neck heavy. I cleaned the frets to get rid of the grind. Gonna keep the pickups in it for now because I can't find a reason to change them.

Overall, a very nice guitar in factory shape or you can do your own mods to it to suit your needs. I just wish shipping prices to the USA were not so astronomical. The fees are about the same as the guitar price.

Here we go

The guitar came in one piece. Only the toggle switch was affected. Otherwise, I did not find any chips or defects. The guitar is exactly like the photos. The heel smoothly connects the neck with the body, there is a recess in the abdomen. The frets are smooth, it was almost not necessary to tune the guitar. After the acoustics, it feels quite heavy. But it is quite comfortable to play sitting down. In my opinion, this is a wonderful musical instrument. I admit, I was going to make a smaller headless guitar out of it, but my hand does not rise.

So, I waited for the weekend and finally picked up this guitar after receiving it. It's small, really small. Much smaller than the original exporters. Immediately after opening the box, it's impossible to play it. The strings are 5 mm high, the bridge is turned up to the maximum height, and the pickups are recessed into the body. I thought it could be fixed. But no matter how I adjusted the анкерный стержень or played with the neck, the strings continued to rattle in the same place. The tuning fork doesn't tune at all, no matter how much I turn the bridge bolts, no matter what I do. This guitar can only be played with open chords. In general, it's impossible to play. It's not a guitar, it's a set of boards with wire. I'm very disappointed! I've been waiting for this guitar since April, and then I waited for delivery for almost a month (although it was supposed to take 12-17 days) and in the end, I got the worst guitar of my life! For that money, I'd rather have bought a Cort in my city and been happy. In general, everything is very bad with this guitar! I don't recommend it!

My favorite purchase
DTCW 17.01.2022
Bought a couple guitars from HB with the intention of maybe selling them on Facebook if they turned out to be a let down. I have been pleasantly surprised but not more so than this specific guitar.

The other TE style guitars were safe bets as long as they were built well. However, to see an Explorer style guitar at this price range had me curious. Most other brands it's hard to get a guitar that looks like this for under $450, with Jackson's Kelly model being relatively similar for about $100 less than that.

This blew me away. The neck is perfectly rolled and the frets are filed down to be very comfortable, if maybe a little messy from tool marks. But that is where the negative feedback ends because at it's current price of $139 I didn't even expect anything remotely close to that.

HB has impressed me greatly with all 3 instruments and how they can offer a satisfactory experience for entry level prices. In the future I am looking forward to buying a more expensive model to see what their higher end work must be like.
