Pleasant sound and convenient size
For this instrument I use D'Addario 'classical guitar' strings in a re-entrant open tuning. From 6th string to 1st string: G4-G2-D3-G3-B3-D4.
This is because my main instrument is the 5-string banjo; the above tuning keeps me in familiar territory.
I play it using metal fingerpicks and a plastic thumbpick, plucking the strings close to the bridge. This elicits a tone that is equal parts bright and mellow.
I find this tone, combined with the melodic and counter-melodic possibilities of this tuning, good for adding a novel but consonant layer to Appalachian music, or earthy-spiritual music more broadly.
