A solid overdrive choice
I play mainly blues/blues rock, and like to have a clean sound that is just pushing over the line, so has a bit of break around the edges. This pedal responds nicely to dynamics. I'm able to set it fairly clean, but with a bit more pick attack I can push into into a light breakup overdrive. As such, for the tone I like, this pedal performs perfectly. Right now, for my preferences, the Wampler Euphoria or Nobels ODR-1 are better for my desired sound.
It drives well with the gain turned up, and is a pleasing sound on my tube amps (Marshall Class 5 and Fender Pro Junior which I keep at clean volume levels).
I no real criticism of this pedal. It does everything it's supposed to, and I do like the tone, it's just that right now I have other pedals I prefer with my amps. It's definitely well worth trying out, though, and may have perfect for tone you and your setup!

I don't know the original Timmy by Paul Cochrane, but this is pretty great. I run it as a first stage overdrive into a Wampler Tumnus (with gain turned pretty high) to get a singing full-spectrum overdrive. With the clipping switch and the bass and treble pots you can dial in pretty much any sound – from high-headroom sparkling clean to compressed clipped saturated tone.

Great transparent boost/overdrive
Pros:
+ Fully transparent (tone knobs all the way clockwise)
+ Enough gain to drive an amp
+ Can serve as a volume boost with the gain all the way off
+ Practical mini format for those inclined
Cons:
- The difference between the 3 modes is very subtle
- Bass/Treble knobs can only cut, not boost
- It doesn't offer the same volume boos as the Xotic EP Booster, if that's what you're looking for

A bit underwhelmed
Now, don't get me wrong, this is a great little pedal. The construction is road worthy, the knobs and footswitch feel real solid. No issues in terms of it's construction and foreseeable reliability.
I've heard that this was "THE" pedal for any Vox owner, and it does play really well with my AC15. My main issue is the high end. It's very fizzy and hard to dial out. Even with careful dialing in of the MXR Timmy, the high end is either fizz or gets too dark for my taste,
I have other great "transparent" pedals, and perhaps I would not be so picky if I had nothing else to compare it to. All-in-all this is a great pedal, I'm just not too impressed with the fizzy high end.

best basic transparent overdrive
This is a really good transparent overdrive. The grit is very smooth and can be raspier with the choice of clipping modes. The sound is really beautifull transparent. The Eq is very powerfull (bas in pregain !). I was surprised. It is much better than video's show on you tube. True Quality. If you have an nice reverb tone you want to keep but get it a little more gritty, gainy: this is the first pedal to think about.
Top ! It is not for the power dirty overdrive, thats's not it's purpose. And if you want more special touches , you can use the shoe pedals dod overdrive, bluesdriver boss, Klon clone, Nobels... But this is the most pure one. I got it already slightly used from Thoman, not even in a plastic bag anymore. But I don't mind. They always accept my returns without being difficult. As long as it works and is not scratched.

if you like Timmy v3, you like mxr Timmy...Because both of these.

Good cost effective overdrive
Really good overdrive and gives you pretty good Timmy style sound. I use this alone or in stack with other overdrive.
