Keep obstacles to a minimum

Thomann FL-1000 RE Transverse Flute

Beginners, in particular, benefit from an instrument that functions reliably from the very first note, and this is just as true of the universally popular flute. Budding musicians have little of the experience necessary to appreciate an instrument's peculiarities or to work around technical shortcomings, as these skills naturally develop over time. At these early stages, a positive learning experience is of the essence, helping to maintain motivation and ensuring that practice remains enjoyable rather than becoming a source of frustration. At the same time, affordability plays an important role, as students and parents are often understandably cautious when choosing their first instrument. The Thomann FL-1000 RE is designed with these considerations in mind, offering a straightforward and accessible playing experience that places the focus firmly on making music while keeping unnecessary obstacles to a minimum.

Thomann FL-1000 RE Transverse Flute Keys

Top quality and features

Despite being aimed at beginners, the Thomann FL-1000 RE places considerable emphasis on quality, reliability and ease of use. The headjoint, footjoint and key system are made from nickel silver and finished with a full silver plating, giving the instrument an attractive appearance while contributing to its durability. High-quality Pisoni pads from Italy help ensure precise key sealing and dependable performance, while the offset G key is designed to suit smaller hands by allowing more comfortable fingering with shorter and more natural finger movements. The flute also features a C-foot, which promotes an easy response, a bright and clear tone, and comfortable handling during practice and performance. To complete the package, the instrument is supplied with a cleaning rod and a practical, sturdy case for safe storage and transport.

The perfect choice for beginners

The Thomann FL-1000 RE is not simply a flute that beginners can use; it has been developed with their specific requirements in mind. Its easy response and flexible tonal character help make the first steps of learning more approachable, allowing new players to focus on developing their technique and musical expression with confidence. At the same time, its accessible price point makes it an attractive option for those looking to begin their musical journey without a significant initial investment. Among entry-level instruments, the FL-1000 RE stands out as a thoughtfully designed flute that offers a gentle learning curve, while still combining genuine playability, practicality, and value in a way that will ensure long-term enjoyment as skills continue to grow.

About Thomann Wind Instruments

Thomann-brand instruments, which are exclusively built by renowned manufacturers, now constitute a large part of Thomann's product range alongside numerous big-name brands. With unbeatable price-performance ratios, Thomann wind instruments are the obvious first choice for students and beginners – and others too. The technical features and uncompromising sound quality they offer are usually reserved for much more expensive instruments found in the professional market segment.

E mechanisms and their benefits

Modern flutes are typically built with a closed G# key, a design that offers practical advantages but also introduces a well-known acoustic compromise. Because the keys responsible for the G# and A notes are mechanically linked, the high E in the third octave can be more difficult to produce cleanly and consistently. To address this characteristic, many instruments are equipped with a dedicated E mechanism, which improves the response of this note by modifying the interaction between the relevant keys. Rather than representing a flaw in the instrument, the tendency of the high E to respond less readily is a consequence of the standard flute design, while the inclusion of an E mechanism is widely regarded as a valuable enhancement. In practice, the mechanism uses an additional lever positioned between the second G key and the F# key, automatically closing the second G key when the high E is played, resulting in a noticeably easier and more reliable response.

Alright for the basics (Grades 1-2. 3 at a push)
Paul Tredgett 31.12.2017
I bought this flute for my daughter who is 8. I have played the flute since I was young boy (it's been 21 years...) and have played in many different orchestras and symphonies over the years. This flute overall isn't too bad for it's price range. The tone is okay for a nickel flute and has alright colour as well. The keys are nicely responsive and have a bit of resistance (which I personally like) this can make it a bit difficult for small and weak hands though. Although a Chinese built flute like almost all flutes available at this price range the build quality is quite nice and I think will survive all the bumps from a young player. The extra bits provided by Thomann are nice and work but new cleaning cloths will most likely have to be bought in the next few months. This flute is quite easily to over blow which is a constant struggle for new players however with a bit of work the flute can make a nice sound most notably in the lower registers. The biggest problem with this flute is the tuning, especially as you go up the harmonics (octaves). Everything gets wonky and it's sharp and flat all over the place... this won't be a major problem for early players but as they move up and begin needing these harmonics. I as a semi professional player can just about squeeze out the first 3 and at a major push the 4th harmonic but after that it all goes haywol and I find it practically impossible. So overall not bad, once students begin working on tone production and flexibility to draw back and increase the sound as well as harmonics they will really being struggling. I'm sure it will do my daughter well for the next 1-2 years. After that a jump to a much more capable flute from one of my tried and trusted brands (Yamaha, Pearl, Altus or Azumi) around the £1600 price point will be necessary for her to continue into grades 3,4,5 etc

Love at first sight!
Michael Matinian 25.05.2021
Short background: I'm 33 and I've always wanted to play a musical instrument. Took me a while to figure out it's the flute.
Started off buying a super cheap one, which almost made me quit, so luckily I realized it's the quality of the flute that's causing me to not be comfortable and not produce a good sound.
Fast forward a month later... returned the cheap flute and bought the FL-1000 fro Thomann. Felt like the price is super good for a beginner's flute.
Came through the mail, unwrapped it, took it out, played a sound and since then I've been enjoying it every day. From holding it in my hands to how easy it is to produce a sound, I cannot express the joy of just staring at it.
That's my short story <3 I hope it helps out the next guy or gal.
Greetings,
Michael.

Compared to a yamaha 272...
Fluturist 09.04.2020
This flute is essentially filling the same purpose as a Yamaha 272 -- except that's it's less than half the price of the Yamaha.

Compared to the Yamaha 272, the Thomann is quite significantly harder to handle on the low notes, and generally less tolerant of bad embouchure (I'm thinking of the D in particular which starts very slowly if you try and just lazily breathe on it). It's also, for me, a little bit breathier and more difficult on the high notes. It also seems slightly heavier. Then again, in terms of actual sound, most people don't seem to be able to tell it apart from my 272.

BUT, it's less than half the price. For 200 pounds or so, it's a great alternative -- a beginner might well be better off spending 200 pounds on this and not having to worry too much about how they treat it, and then going for a step-up flute later.

So, I like this flute. But you are getting what you pay for -- it's not as good as a 272 and it's not as forgiving.
