The H1 gets a facelift

Zoom's new H1n is an impressively versatile handheld recorder that can also be used as a USB audio interface, USB microphone, and SD card reader. The device's functions are controlled via dedicated buttons, while a high-resolution 1.25" LC graphic display provides information on its operating status and intuitive navigation is ensured by a clear multilingual menu.

Extensive features

The H1n features two high-quality condenser microphones in a 90° XY stereo format. An internal limiter enables the distortion-free recording of signals with up to 120dB SPL, and a switchable low-cut attenuates annoying pop and wind noises. In addition, the H1n has a stereo mini-jack input that supports 2.5V plug-in power, and a 3.5mm headphone output with its own volume control is provided for monitoring signals. Simple playback of recordings, however, is possible via the internal mono speaker. The H1n supports recordings in WAV format with up to 24-bit / 96kHz as well as in MP3 format.

The perfect tool for creators

The H1n handheld recorder can also be used in combination with digital cameras. Recording music, ambient sounds, and speech is quick and easy thanks to the device's simple menu navigation, and the quality of the recordings is impeccable thanks to the sophisticated technology it employs. Using the H1n as a USB audio interface and microphone as well as a reader for SD cards also opens up numerous other possibilities. For example, voiceovers can be recorded using a DAW while the Zoom recorder functions as an audio interface and USB microphone.

About Zoom

Founded in 1983, the Japanese company Zoom manufactures a variety of audio equipment, including a range of portable "handy" recorders as well as multi-effects processors, effects pedals, drum machines, and samplers. Over the past thirty years, the company has built a reputation for producing innovative yet affordable products based on original microchip designs. Since the Zoom-9002 (an ultra-compact multi-effects processor that can be attached to a guitar strap) was introduced in 1990, Zoom has become one of the leaders in digital audio processing.

Versatility is king

The H1n handheld recorder from Zoom allows the user to easily make high-quality recordings of music, ambient sounds, and speech, and it offers up to ten hours' battery life, so prolonged recording sessions will be no problem at all. In addition, the H1n has an overdub function that can be used to insert audio passages into existing recordings. For use with DSLRs and digital video cameras, internal tone and slate generators can be used to generate acoustic signals for the start and end points in order to make the subsequent synchronisation of image and sound easier. Last but not least, the H1n features a playback speed control for simplified transcription of voice recordings.

Very Handy
The Computer & MIDI Doctor 02.04.2020
I've used the H1n to record the audio from the desk directly into the line in, at an 8 hour day conference, using a 32GB card, and it still had plenty of room on the card.

And at another day conference, I put it on an extra mic stand by the people on stage speaking, to record their talks. I also recorded what came out of the mixing desk on another machine, but used the audio from the H1n as it was clearer.

Now I'm using it via the usb cable to my computer as the mic for my Skype sessions, and any computer screen recordings I do. I bought the kit, so I have the mini stand which has extension legs (I hadn't realised) & makes it a great tabletop mic.

I also use it for any song ideas I have, to record my singing, guitar or piano. The quality is good enough to put it into Studio One to start a new song. I pull the card out, put it into an adaptor and plug it into my laptop and transfer the audio. (Transfering audio directly from the machine is MUCH slower.)

I find the on/off switch weird - it is a slide that you have to hold for a second or two until the machine boots up/ powers down. Annoying, but about the only critiek I can think of.

Small, portable, cheap, very good quality audio for the price.

H
Overkill for the price!
Hrks 01.07.2022
I've purchased the H1n set with the APH-1n accessories pack.

All the products are of resonable high quality materials. The stand form the APH-1n pack is metal. The H1n is made of a plastic housing, but' i've had products of much worse quality by now. Careful not to drop it on rocks or something similar! The buttons feel fine, very clicky and the interface is logically laid out wich makes it for a simple and enjoyable handling experience.

The quality od the recording is reasonably good with options of 16 bit and 24 bit recording in 48 (16 bit addiotional 44.1 khz) and 96 khz as well as mp3 recording (up to 320 kbps). There is some marginal noise present but at the price range i think it's purely negligible.

The mic's are very nice also considering the price. I've had much worse for more money! Here you get two for the price of one! Both are condenser and capture the space at a remarkable depth, depending on the set input level.

I've purchased the H1n for recording my mixes out of a looper (via LINE-IN) with hopes of monitoring it as well, with my headphones, real-time. Well, it turns out you can do that as well! the signal of the LINE-IN can be , of course, monitored at real time, but also AMPLIFIED (Superlux HD681) to a very resonable level. That makes an adittional mixing desk or a headphone amplifier, however small, for the purpose of monitoring, completley obsolete! What a joy to discover this!

I haven't had the time to try the USB connection for the audio interface for the PC yet.

So honestly, the H1n has surpassed my expectations that were pretty high to start with. For the price of 110 eur you are sure to get:

- A standalone HQ (16, 24 bit), remote, battery and USB powered field recorder via Line In (3,5 mm)
- Two very good condenser microphones ready to record
- A headphone amplifier
*- APH 1n - many useful accessories at a resonable good quality

I'm happy with my purchase and would recommend it to anybody searching for a perfect multi-practic recording tool! For a product that's delivered it's promises, at the mentioned price - I think this is a very good deal!

SG
A good starting point
Saleh Gafer 05.12.2018
I used it for record almost every non-digital sounds. I have it for more than 6 months and I have no problems with its workflow. It has a very easy to learn and use interface.

It's made from plastic (except microphones). It's way lighter than I thought (I was compared it with Zoom H4 and H6 on my mind) but it's steady and stabile. It works well for collect ambient, atmosphere sounds and one-hit samples. Sometimes you can catch frequencies that you don't want but by using gain adjustments and build-in eq you can decrease them.

Well, pro's are absolutely the price and quality factors. You have some other options in this price range but it's one step ahead from in the segment that it belongs. In this point of view it's a god starting point for collecting audio samples and recording interviews etc. In the other hand if you want to record a direct signal for instance coming from a mixer or sound card, you do not have a line inputs. This may be a problem if you want to record a live session or a concert. For this I suggest you to buy H4 or higher versions, you can use them for both recording with build-in microphones and direct signal that comes from line-ins.

But if you want to start collecting audio, recording an acoustic session or an interview; this could be a very good choice in this price range.

JM
It's a really great recorder
José Meira 26.07.2020
I bought this recorder to carry with me all the time because I wanted to expand my sample library. It hasn't failed me in anything and I've recorded a lot of stuff with it, from percussion samples to rehearsals, ambient sounds, animals, etc. The only small problem I find (but I'll assume it happens with every one without the proper equipment) is that it is really sensible to your touch and movements without the handle, so you have to remain absolutely static when it is recording. Apart from that, it's a great recorder for the price and has really great audio quality.
