My favorite distortion pedal
Of course, I cannot argue about personal preferences, but I just can't imagine why someone wouldn't give this pedal 5 stars.
It has just the right amount of features: two modes - regular and super distortion which in essence is just a switch between two types of tones. The volume and the tone knobs really help a lot with balancing its sound with the final tone of your complete setup.
This pedal is in fact so versatile, that I use it as distortion, overdrive, and fuzz. Super distortion mode, max distortion, and 3 o'clock tone makes it a perfect John Frusciante distortion for me, lowering the tone knob and adding a little bit extra gain in your pedal chain makes it sound like a fuzz. Regular distortion mode and distortion knob all the way down sounds like blues overdrive.
Recommend!

What a beast!
The Boss DS-2 is a perfect distortion pedal for the money for my use. While it may not be as instantly recognizable as the DS-1, it has a lovely warm tone at lower drive levels and can produce some of the boldest lead tones when driven hard.
It's a Boss pedal, so the build quality is outstanding, Boss produce some of the best-made pedals in the world, so no complaints there.
It looks great, I wasn't a huge fan of the orange colour scheme at first, but I have to say it's grown on me and now I think it's a really cool looking pedal.
The controls are easy to use and navigate, it doesn't take that much tinkering to get it to sound how you might want.
The turbo function is cool, however I don't find myself using it too often as the regular drive sounds so great. I do use the turbo function sometimes, but only when I'm playing some dirty drop D Metal riffs, which isn't all the time since I'm more of a soul / blues kind of axeman. However, I actually bought this pedal because it has the turbo setting as that adds extra dynamics. It can produce subtle blues drive tones, all the way to screaming Metal leads - Very versatile.
I can't find any cons to be perfectly honest, this little beast of a pedal does everything I need it to very very well.
Conclusion: If you're in the market for a distortion pedal that can produce awesome drive dynamics, buy it. You won't be disappointed.

A classic
I’ve used this pedal for well over a year and I can’t really see it ever leaving my board. I’ve never really used the first mode as I just prefer the tone of the second. This is subjective and it never hurts to have the option though. The pedal definitely has a bit fuzzy sound to it – which is a good thing. Like other Boss pedals, it has a durable chassis with pedal-wide switch. Compared to a button style this is much easier to toggle. I’ve used it with humbuckers, single coils and filtertrons and it pairs great with all.

Powerful
First distortion I've used and is amazing. The sound is full, strong. Exactly what I was looking for.

Marmite for Guitarists
People seem to either love or hate the Boss DS's. I generally just use it while practicing and it gives out the exact sound one would expect from an orange Boss pedal. Sounds of a thousand 80's rock and metal bands.
If you buy one distortion pedal this is the best middle of the road all rounder and should definitely be considered.
Then again, I eat Marmite.

super fun pedal
I enjoy using this pedal as it is not only useful but just down right fun to use. i like the uses of the turbo knob as it gives you access to mids and or a more scooped sound. it is in general a useful pedal that is very straight forward and easy to use.

Ideal for a Marshall
I'd read the boss distortion worked well with Marshall... I can confirm that's true...
We play punk from 77 style sounds more overdrive to crust punk.... on the more hard-core numbers this is the pedal i turn to...
Singing as well as playing I don't want to be searching for the foot switch and boss got this right... when you are playing fast and with intensity and reliant on peripheral vision to work the pedals... their design makes life easy...
Great tone... and real easy to mould to your satisfaction....

Very cool
If you are searching for a Nirvana tone distortion, this is the pedal you must take into consideration. It was actually the pedal used by Kurt Cobain. The sound is pretty heavy and full; it just has that grungy, metal sound. The pedal has plenty of features to start off with. I recommend everyone to try this our for using it for recording or to practice.
