Makes Spa !!!

fuzz boy, 26.10.2009
After I had read in a forum from the device, I had to order it as an old EHX-Junkie immediately: Had I had something like that already 1990, when I still hours on tracks on my portastudio back and forth, just around a few Oohs and Aahs draufzubekommen.

So, as usual with EHX: ordered, unpacked and pleased.

Inputs: Instrument and Mic (with boost and 48V!)
Outs: effect and instrument
Power supply 9 V

The editing and saving of the programs is easy: adjust the parameters with the potentiometers and hold down the "Preset" button for a few seconds. The manual is clear and you should be after a quarter of an hour with the device.

For clean tracking and generating backing vocals, the guitar should be really clean, and simple guitar guitars work best. Over the built-in reverb (it does not sound just beautiful, but fulfills its purpose), lead and backing vocals can be separated from each other again cleanly by the backings a bit more Hall as the lead voice.

The generated voices sound relatively organic at moderate settings, and if you want to be so, in extreme settings, beautifully deppert - think of bands like Ween, who almost certainly have the Voice Box immediately on appearance. Since the unit can not know which chord to come next, you should always prefer the chord a fraction of a second, or use the song a tiny bit later, so that also happens what you expect. Is logical and needs a short familiarization phase, but then it's really fun.

I like the multi-harmony (1) fashion. Instant Beach Boys.

The highlight of this device, however, is, in my view, the "gender bender", with which the formants (the frequency ranges which shape the sound color or the timbre of an instrument or a voice) can be shifted. With normal pitch shifting (shifting all the frequencies of a signal), the mickey mouse effect is displaced: the sound body (in this case: I) gives the impression of being displaced upwards Or at the bottom. If I simply move the formants, I can edit the character of the voice without parsing the signal itself. Thus, the device naturally also makes it possible for the sound characteristics of the generated vocals to be changed "sexually" (evenly: gender), without the latter turning pitch-wise during the rotation of the potentiometer, but simply giving the impression that several singers are accessible are.

I usually only use the formant correction to sound a bit bigger and soulful, and occasionally the vocoder - a great Dreingabe, if you keep in mind what such a stand-alone device costs. This "imprints" the guitar (or any other) signal of the signal applied to the microphone input so that, for example, the guitar learns to speak.

Conclusion:
Anyone who has ever wanted to do more with his voice without spending time with nerve-racking plugins or getting to buy sinfully expensive vintage equipment and want to work "on the fly" instead is the best advice. The device is now a fixed band member.

The aha effect par excellence

Tobias aus O., 14.10.2009
As a male vocalist to provide for astonishment, one does not have a God-given exception organ and has enjoyed a classical education, is here and there certainly difficult. But with this fine device quite feasible! But from the beginning: The whole thing is in a solid metal case and can easily be infected. Cable on one side in, on the other out, no big deal. But then the instructions should be designed directly (yes, as a singer :-)) and to first find the respective "zero" setting for all five controls, which is a bit confusing, in part, the 7 o'clock position is partly the 12 Then you can try the single effect in peace, but be careful, the effect of the controller differs from effect to effect. It is recommended to have the manual always at hand. It should also be said that the device is not adjustable in real time. If you touch a controller, the thing jumps to bypass. The regulators hold out a gracious kick, but in the heat of the moment this ensures that one has to switch on the effect here and there, one has just touched a regulator, although effectively nothing has been changed. If you then hit the other footswitch you have to click through all the effects to be back where you were (this is expressed by the fact that you sing the first chorus alone). When trying out you must not be fooled. You really have to sing yourself! Yes, that was clear before, but you should know "how to listen to yourself" and keep that one voice more or less clean. No, you do not have to study, but a little bit of "singing-must-be-gimmed" is necessary. If there are several voices you will try to follow the effect, for example to sing higher. It is highly recommended to use the guitar entrance here. The unit recognizes the played harmony (with clean tuned guitar every semitone) and then stays in this. Nice thing is that you get something felt help in singing through the device, it "sings" and supports around it again. Some effects are like this, so if you put another voice on your own vocals, namely the 1st octave below, it is not that easy to get the effect clean. And, let's be honest, a small change in the formant (10-20% on the knob) is not noticeable to the ordinary mortal listener. At least that's the way it is for me as a male singer, with a bit of teaching, but I can not speak of an apprenticeship. In contrast, there are the two Hall controller, these produce a very strong reverb already at very low setting, but this is quite pleasant; one has (big) influence on the hall itself; at a small plant at all a Hall effect. It should be said that a large PA may have problems with the part. About two monitors (private party) you can hear the effect immediately, is a large mixer, etc. connected the effect disappears something or argues against the effects of the mixer, here must be paid attention to the sound check.
Proved to have the following: For different songs just remember this and that setting and, in due course, press the button, then just make a cool face and keep singing. As a result, you get, and even if it was so boring before, all eyes immediately. The 3rd and 5th octave on top, clean set on the system and a little played on the controls (but not too much) ensures that all listeners are looking for the female choir behind me! Anyone who hears this fine device for the first time makes a pretty funny face. It's not just that there's an effect on it, or just a computer (a tin can!) Sings along, but it actually sounds like that, so suddenly there's a complete choir. And even after this aha effect, if you know how it sounds, you hear this part again and again, without it overreaches; it's easy to sing the whole song, it's not just an effect. Here was a lot of work done. Sure, some computer program or voice effect device can do even better, but in terms of price, these variants are without discussion.
I have to confess honestly that I have not yet tried out some of the effects, especially the "Pfeiff voice" or the "speaking guitar". Here is the YouTube videos referenced. So there is still potential.
All in all, I do not want to give up anymore, it may be a sporanist can do less with this thing, but if you have become friends with the operation, it is a great help and here and there it really serves to "pull off a show" :-).
