J
A significant improvement
Jack85 12.03.2019
I accidentally messed up a nut on one of my guitars so needed to replace it with a new one. I read about different types of nuts, and decided to keep the bone nut like it was originally on the guitar. However after shaping it and putting it on my guitar, I could immediately head and feel the extra resonance compared to the original nut. This is obviously a very high quality nut since the original nut was also bone but nowhere near the same sound. This nut added quite some presence and resonance to the sound of my guitars that I have upgraded the nut on.

The additional good thing is that one nut blank is big enough for making two narrow (fender) type nuts!

BI
Feels like glass or stone, very hard and resonant

I have a good Strat clone that needed steel saddles and a bone nut, to replace zinc saddles and a plastic nut (I believe you should replace both to really improve the tone). The bone is thick, so it took a pretty long time to sand it down to size, but it glued easily with diluted wood glue. Shaping the rounded top was not difficult with coarse sandpaper.

And when polishing it with finer sandpaper, the bone becomes whiter, which is good because the original color is beige-brown. Now it's cream-colored, the same as Fender's cream pickup covers. The lighter color matches the wood's color better, too.

The string slots were cut without problem using a small triangular file, I set the string separation at 35mm, nice that you can choose what suits you, unlike pre-made nuts. I left the thickness of a 0.73mm pick between the 1st fret and the strings; the usual gap is 0.60mm but the sound is fuller with a wider gap, and it leaves a provision for future wear.

Tonewise, more attack, more brilliance, and more harmonics with the steel saddles/ bone nut combo.

Good quality nut blank
Anonymous 09.05.2016
I bought these nut blanks over a year ago now - I used them to make nuts for my telecaster guitars, replacing the original 'plastic bone' nut.

The blanks were nicely oversize and I was able to carve the correct shape using small wood chisels and sandpaper without problem. After cutting the nut slots using a chisel, knife and nail file, I installed and tested them, removed and corrected the slot depth until it was just right.
It took about 1 hour and I was very happy with the result.

There were no probems with the quality of the bone material, they have been on my intensively used guitars for over a year, delivering great performance and I expect them to do so for many years to come. Well worth the price asked.
Incidentally, it is one of the best modifications I have ever made to my guitars - great for keeping tuning after bending strings, the bone material allows your string to slip along it without biting and I am pretty sure that tone is improved too.
Highly recommended if you enjoy diy guitar set ups :)

No "Bones" about it!
Kevo 17.08.2017
This is a premium product. The luthier that fitted it to my guitar knew immediately it originated in Thomann as he was familiar with them. I purchased for my old Martin DX1 Dreadnought acoustic. The tone and the resonance of the strings has dramatically improved. Both myself and my Luthier would highly recommend.

Talking about a great price. This nut is just perfect. Best value for money!

You will need some good tools to get it fit your instrument, but it'll be worth it!

Easy to use!

It's not so hard to shape, you just need the right tools and be patient. Then again anything rushed is always ends up bad!

If your nut is acting nutty, you might replace it with this :)

Great material for processing a nut.
Dr.P 30.04.2014
This was the first time i decided to replace the nut on a bass of mine. My Roger Waters P-Bass had originally a brass nut, which i filed a litte bit wider some time ago to fit some heavier strings. First I was looking for a replacement brass nut to work on, but I found no blank brass nut with a width of 44,5mm.

So i was going with this bone nut. The processing was really easy with some files and abrasive paper. I glued it in with superglue. The strings are gliding perfect in this nut and tuning is perfect. Tonally I see no difference, but now I can use lighter strings again.

I can recommend this nut especially for the first time doing this, the price is fair and you can order directly 2 pieces, so you can mess up one ;)
