Suction works fine on my uke, even if it's not perfectly smooth. Make sure the surface and cup is clean beforehand. Breathe on the cup before pressing it on, to give some moist that helps keeping it stuck. For my use at home it works perfectly fine, wouldn't use it for live gigs though.
