Larry Carlton H7V VS

Received my beautiful Vintage Sunburst H7V after a 14 week wait (I think it was on back order).
Out of the box, it was finished beautifully, the only issues being strings were quite corroded (this is to be expected of a mail order guitar), and some of the frets were a bit oxidised. Nothing that a little bit of fret polish or steel wool can't fix during the next string change.
One other small niggle is that the plastic volume knobs seem to be of low quality. One of them became wobbly and loose (the pot itself is ok but it seems like the plastic teeth of the volume knob are of low quality and sheered). So these will need to be replaced. I'm going to raise this with Thomann to see if they will send me replacement knobs.
UPDATE: Thomann were very responsive to my issue and managed to source and send out replacement knobs in just over a week. Happy customer!

Auf meiner Gitarren-Wunschliste standen zwei Modelle weit oben:
Eine Semi-Hollow-Gitarre sowie eine mit P90-Pickups, des charakteristischen P90-Sounds wegen.

In Bezug auf eine Semi-Hollow rückte schnell die Larry Carlton H7 von Sire ins Blickfeld. Bezüglich der P90 erregte die Gibson Spezial P90 bzw. Spezial P90 Tribute meine Aufmerksamkeit. Die Entscheidung für die H7 reifte aber erst mal schneller.

Als ich Anfang Oktober sah, dass es die H7 in einer Vintage-Version mit P90 gibt, war die Sache klar: dieses Modell wollte ich gerne spielen.

Der erste Eindruck beim Auspacken bestätigte sich nach gründlichem Augenschein: hervorragende Verarbeitung, ein wunderschönes Instrument, Riegelahorndecke mit edlem Vintage-Sunburst-Finish und excellentem Binding.

In die Hand genommen fällt der Hals als erstes auf: die Sire-typische Rundung zum Griffbrett ist sehr angenehm. Die Bünde an den Kanten erstklassig geglättet im Vergleich meiner anderen Modelle anderer Marken in der gleichen Preisklasse. An den vergleichsweise schmalen Hals am oberen Ende gewöhne ich mich schnell. Die Mechanik macht einen ebenso soliden Eindruck wie die Regler und der Pickup-Schalter.

Das Gewicht der Semi-hollow mit Centerblock ist für mich akzeptabel, das Instrument insgesamt am Gurt gut ausbalanciert. Da es meine erste mit Centerblock ist habe ich hier allerdings keinen Vergleich.

Der Klang ist einfach toll. Typischer P90-Sound mit deutlichem Druck „untenrum“, d. h. am Neck-Pickup Bässe und Mitten sehr ausgeprägt aber transparent ohne muffig zu werden. Und im Anschlag der ordentliche Punch wenn man ihn braucht. In Kombination mit der semi-hollow-typischen Klangfülle und dem Sustain eine hervorragende Kombination, insbesondere für Blues und Blues-Rock. Über einen Helix gespielt bleiben aber auch für andere Genres sicher keine Klangformungswünsche unerfüllt. Die Erkundung der Fusion- und Jazzwelt habe ich noch vor mir.

Das Setup der H7V VS war ok, der Halsstab in Ordnung, aber die Brücke deutlich zu hoch. Das ließ sich aber gut nachstellen. Danach war auch die Oktavreinheit sehr gut.

Fazit: wer den P90-Sound sucht sollte sich die Sire H7V unbedingt ansehen. Preis-Leistungs-Verhältnis: top!

Received the guitar yesterday. After initial inspection of fit and finish (which is very nice apart from a small fracture on the edge of one of the tone knobs), I plugged it into my amp... No sound from the neck pick up!!! The 3-way toggle switch was a little loose and didn't work! Could only activate the bridge pick-up. Decided to put the guitar back in the box and return it to Thomann. I am utterly disappointed with the QC on the last two Sire guitars, I have received from Thomann. I have two other Sire guitars (H7 Black and L7v TB), that had no issues to mention. I know, you can order guitars from Thomann and have a complete setup made for extra cost. You can even order a Plek treatment. BUT, I would at least expect that a simple inspection of the electronics would be standard and included in the standard price! Or should one be prepared to pay extra for your local guitar tech to bring the instrument to acceptable working order? I will be looking at other brands in future.
