History

So, which manufacturer can take credit for having been the first to make modern electric baritone guitars available? It is a fact that Danelectro went for this instrument in the 1950s, and that the guitar took off in a big way in soundtrack music for various Spaghetti Westerns. Companies such as Fender, Gretsch, Jerry Jones, and Burns London, but also Gibson, Music Man and many others jumped on the bandwagon. Ever since, most large manufacturers have been producing this type of guitar consistently, if in low numbers.

Musicians such as Brian Wilson, who headed the legendary Beach Boys, increased the baritone guitar's popularity and made its sound a key feature of their music genre. In the late 1980s, it finally made its way into the hands of rock and metal guitarists, where it trended to ever lower tunings and where the 7-string e-guitar was not yet a significant factor.
