3. History

The first professional quality inear stage monitoring systems were developed by in the late eighties by Stevie Wonder's live sound engineer, Chrys Lindop, and British audio technician Martin Noar. Manufactured by British company Garwood, early inear systems became popular with the big touring acts of the time such as Michael Bolton.

The idea was soon adopted by manufacturers of related technology (most obviously Sennheiser who already made both wireless instrument/mic systems and headphones); nowadays inear monitoring is right across the price range.
