The Ortofon Bronze 2M is a truly exquisite pickup system for record players, offering absolutely top-class, high-resolution audio. Its nude Fine Line diamond tip, with an extremely slim elliptical cut, is capable of reproducing the shape of a record's groove in extraordinary detail, enabling a frequency bandwidth of 20Hz to 29KHz. Despite these high-end specs, the Bronze 2M's moving magnet construction makes it widely compatible with audio systems and phono preamps of many different kinds. The cartridge itself ships with an original Ortofon tracking force gauge and a cleaning brush, as well as the necessary headshell screws plus matching screwdriver:
The Ortofon 2M Bronze is an outstanding pickup designed for hi-fi fans who expect the best when it comes to transparent, honest sound. In terms of price and performance, the Bronze model can be placed neatly between the widely-used 2M Blue and the renowned 2M Black – the 2M Bronze actually uses the same very low-resonance Lexan DMX synthetic cartridge enclosure as the 2M Black. The sharp Fine Line cut of the diamond, a trademark Ortofon feature, ensures the needle stays firmly but gently in the groove, for a high level of tracking precision. The sound generated by the Ortofon 2M Bronze can, in general, be characterised by its very natural tone, with a well-contoured bass, rich mids, and crystal-clear trebles – and a very clearly structured soundstage. This impression was shared by the readers of the German hi-fi magazine AUDIO, who voted the 2M Bronze as the best phono pickup of 2017.
With its widely-praised 2M series, Ortofon offers a wide range of robust and relatively uncomplicated moving-magnet cartridges, with models to suit every need and budget. The 2M Bronze sits perfectly balanced at the centre of the collection: On the one hand, it's a thoroughly worthwhile upgrade from a 2M Red or Blue, but it's equally suited to hi-fi enthusiasts with an ear for great quality, but who don't want to make the major step up to the higher prices of the Shibata-tipped 2M Black and 2M Black LVB250. Anyone looking for the golden mean between the balanced sound of the 2M Blue and the spectacular precision of the 2M Black will find plenty to enjoy in the 2M Bronze. This vinyl virtuoso is, understandably, less well-suited to DJing and similar settings.
The Danish company Ortofon has been synonymous with high-quality phono technology for more than a century. Founded in 1918 by engineers Axel Petersen and Arnold Poulsen, Ortofon developed its first magnetic pickup system, the M-15, in 1969. The company’s futuristic-looking Concorde pickup series was launched in 1982, and its stylish, streamlined design established itself on the DJ scene as the new standard for use in clubs and discotheques. Ortofon also produces high-quality moving magnet and moving coil systems for every application and price point, from quality-conscious beginners through to uncompromising high-end hi-fi aficionados.
Whether the new owner is aiming for an upgrade from another Ortofon 2M model, or as a replacement for another cartridge entirely, the 2M Bronze is easy to install, with a bit of care. The cartridge is mounted to the tonearm or headshell using the two screws and the matching screwdriver supplied in the package. The turntable's four connection leads are then carefully attached the four pins of the 2M Bronze. Finally, the tracking force will need adjusting using the gauge supplied for that very purpose – and the 2M Bronze is ready to go.
Hyperelliptical profiles such as Fine Line or Shibata are particularly slim upgrades on the standard elliptical cut. The stylus extends further into the groove, thus following its modulations with greater precision: The result is lower distortion and phase error, along with finer nuances in spatial imaging and in treble reproduction in particular. In addition, properly aligned hyperelliptical profiles give the stylus tip improved tracking, for both a longer life for the needle itself and reduced record wear. However, they are more complex to manufacture and, as such, more expensive.
