Neve sound in a single channel strip

Rupert Neve Designs Newton Channel

The Rupert Neve Designs Newton Channel combines a microphone preamp, equaliser and compressor within a single unit, bringing the renowned Neve sound into modern music production and live audio environments through its studio-friendly 19" rackmount format. Its intuitive control layout supports a fast, fluid workflow while delivering a clean, detailed, and refined sound throughout. The Class-A microphone preamp provides up to 72dB of gain, including 6dB of fine adjustment, while the three-band equaliser provides up to 12dB of gain with precise control via dedicated potentiometers. The compressor section allows adjustment of threshold and release settings alongside a make-up gain of up to +20dB, and the addition of the legendary Silk circuit enhances variable overtones for a rich, powerful and characterful sound.

For flexibility and precision

The microphone preamp is configured to the standard microphone impedance by default, while also allowing operation at line level for added flexibility in a wide range of setups. Its rear-panel XLR combo input supports both XLR and jack connections, and alongside precise gain adjustment, the preamp includes phase reversal and 48V phantom power for condenser microphones. The equaliser section is designed with the same level of precision, featuring 31-step potentiometers for accurate control, a parametric mid-range band switchable between 220Hz and 7kHz, low-frequency boost options at 60Hz or 150Hz, and high-frequency enhancement at 8kHz or 16kHz. The compressor can also be positioned before the equaliser when required, while the rear panel additionally provides a -2dBu XLR output next to the main output for compensating high input levels without additional gain adjustment.

Professional sound in minutes

The Rupert Neve Designs Newton Channel is aimed at sound engineers looking to enrich productions with the legendary Neve sound through a workflow that remains fast, intuitive and uncomplicated from start to finish. Its straightforward operation allows professionals to focus more on the recording itself rather than spending excessive time adjusting parameters, while also making high-quality sound accessible to musicians with less engineering experience. The variable high-pass filter continuously sweeps between 20 and 250Hz to remove unwanted low-frequency content such as footfall noise, and the parametric mid-range band gives precise control over instrument presence and upper harmonic detail – useful for bringing a vocal forward or taming a harsh room reflection without touching the broader frequency balance. When required, the equaliser, compressor, and Silk circuit can each be switched to true bypass mode, offering a clean and direct signal path whenever processing is not needed.

About Rupert Neve Designs

Rupert Neve's life's work has a profound influence on the world of professional studio technology to this day. Without the 8078 studio console (and its predecessors) developed by Neve and modules such as the 1073 preamp/EQ or the 2254 compressor, countless classic albums from a wide variety of eras and genres would not sound the way they do. Rupert Neve Designs is the latest company Neve has co-founded. The company, headquartered in Wimberley, Texas, launched the first products from the Portico series in 2005 and to this day offers a diverse portfolio of professional recording equipment right through to the modular 5088 analogue mixer.

Add body and presence to vocals

The Rupert Neve Designs Newton Channel is particularly effective for vocal processing, allowing mid-range frequencies to be enhanced with the equaliser to increase perceived loudness in the range most sensitive to the human ear. At the same time, the compressor maintains a controlled, consistent volume level throughout. This combination creates a fuller and more present sound that sits confidently against other signals within a mix, helping vocals cut through with clarity and balance. Compression can be adjusted quickly and effectively using only a few controls. If noticeable pumping does occur, the release time is set too fast; a slower release allows the gain to return more gradually and naturally over time. For stereo applications, two units can also be linked together via the rear-panel Link connection, providing smooth and coherent stereo compression when required.
