Selectable power amp structure modes:
The Synergy SYN-20IR is a compact, US-made all-tube amplifier that's suitable for home use as well as in the studio or on stage and offers a high level of flexibility thanks to its clear layout. Building on the concept of the earlier SYN-30, it features a fixed clean channel and a modular preamp slot that allows the installation of interchangeable preamp modules. The modules add two customisable tube channels that can be switched using the included triple footswitch or controlled via MIDI, for easy and convenient operation. Powered by two EL84 tubes, the power amp delivers 20 watts of power, providing plenty of volume with responsive dynamics in a compact format, and a built-in speaker simulation based on impulse responses completes the design, with settings adjustable directly on the unit or via dedicated editor software.
The Synergy SYN-20IR combines genuine tube circuitry with a high degree of tonal freedom and thus avoids the limitation of a single sound character. The preamp features two 12AX7 dual-triode tubes, while a permanently built-in clean channel with straightforward volume and tone controls ensures immediate usability. The real heart of the unit is the slot for optional preamp modules, with each module powered by two additional 12AX7 tubes, adding two fully-featured channels to the amplifier. The Synergy modules are available in a wide range of styles, covering everything from vintage clean sounds to modern Metal tones, and full backward compatibility with Egnater and Randall MTS modules expands the range even further. Also new to this model is the Structure section, which features three different power amp configurations that allow users to choose between modern, classic, and neutral tones, complemented by a Reactance control that subtly shapes the treble and midrange response.
The Synergy SYN-20IR works effortlessly at home with speaker cabs or headphones, integrates seamlessly into studio setups, or can be used on stage thanks to its built-in IR speaker simulation. The selection of different preamp modules opens up an exceptionally broad sonic spectrum, from vintage clean and British crunch to sophisticated Rock sounds and tight modern Metal. With a balanced, powerful response, the 20-watt tube power amp delivers a wide selection of tones and can be shaped effectively using the Structure circuit and Reactance control. 13 integrated impulse responses are available for speaker simulation, which can be exchanged using the free editor software, with both the Structure setting and the selected IR stored individually for each channel, and the flexible and sophisticated design is topped off by a series effects loop.
Synergy is a brand of the Californian distributor Boutique Amps Distribution. It makes a complete range of all-tube amplifiers, preamplifiers and associated cabinets. Their special feature is the modular design of the preamplifier, which gives the systems a high degree of sound flexibility, expandability and is thus obsolescence-proof. The corresponding preamplifier modules are available in different versions and are usually developed in cooperation with renowned amplifier manufacturers such as Friedman, Diezel, Engl, Soldano or Fryette, whose circuits have been ported into the module format. This way, the sound character of the amplifier can be redefined again and again at will, according to the context, whether live or in the studio.
Developed and patented by Bruce Egnater, the Modular Tube System (MTS) was introduced in 2000 as a flexible amplifier concept with interchangeable, tube-driven preamp modules. These plug-in modules make changing the sound character of a preamp or all-tube amplifier easy, and in addition to Egnater's own single and dual-channel designs, the system was licensed to Randall for several years, resulting in a number of additional single-channel modules. Synergy is now continuing this idea in a technically updated but fully backwards-compatible format, with newly developed modules and dedicated preamps and full amplifiers with matching slots. Synergy modules feature two channels, each with independent gain and level controls, and at least one multi-band equaliser for detailed tone shaping.
