This is a great little pedal. Despite what many people say, I think it’s great for metal. It gets a nice, gritty distortion when pushed into a dirty amp, but fair warning: it is outrageously noisy. I don’t really recommend using this pedal as a boost if you aren’t using a noise gate.
The design and construction of the Dark Matter is superb. It’s sleek, compact, has a cool sparkly black finish complete with a nice graphic, and it feels very robust. On top of this, it has a very prominent but not overly bright LED, and both of the EQ knobs click into place at 12 o’clock. Minor details, I know, but it’s nice that it’s there.
Another thing I’d like to point out is the footswitch. This probably has the nicest footswitch I have ever seen on a pedal. It’s got a really smooth action and a nice, prominent click to let you know you’re there. I have never once had to put a lot of force on it or had to fear it breaking.
That said, it’s not all peaches and cream. This pedal has some issues, as I’m sure you would expect a 50 dollar drive pedal to have. The main issue would be the aforementioned noise. This pedal is practically unusable without a noise gate. As well, it’s a bit odd that it features bass and treble knobs, but no mids. The small switch on the pedal is allegedly supposed to be some kind of mid boost function, but the difference is hardly noticeable.
All in all, a great little distortion pedal that’s perfect for anyone, and definitely worth the price tag!
