Voice Synthesis Without The Hassle

Christian3535, 30.10.2018
I bought the PO-35 as an addition to my 8 vocoders and various other synth engines and samplers. This is a very useful device if you want to create artificial vocal effects quickly and with good audio quality. You can record your spoken phrases using the built in microphone or line input. This recording is used to drive the various synth engines the PO-35 has on offer. If you are looking for a sampler then this probably isn't the device for you, there are other things to buy for sampling. You need to keep in mind this is a voice synthesiser and not a sampler in the true sense. I've had some great results so far ranging from Kraftwerk styles, Daft Punk etc. Very quick to use but you will need to spend a little time learning the various keyboard shortcuts of which there are several. I'm putting together a cheat sheet to remind myself as I don't think I'll remember them all and there are some functions that aren't listed in the manual but you can find easily enough by searching on the internet for PO-35 secrets. I really like trying ideas and they sound great. It is a shame the silicone cases are so expensive, I just can't bring myself to pay for one. It should be fine without a case if you are careful with it. If you like voice synths then this is the device for you.

Well thought-out little calculator

French, 26.02.2018
The Po-35 is my first pocket operator. I found the idea just funny, frankly without knowing exactly if or to what extent I can use the Po afterwards in my setup.

It's just fun to record something and tweak it. It's amazing what you can bring into such a small box, considering that the logic including the speaker is just behind the screen.
Of course you should not expect too much from the speaker, but he is already loud for his size.

Really successful I find that I can easily integrate the Po in my setup, by him with my Volca Kick synce - cable in, Sync2 set - finished.

Another great feature is pattern chaining.
For example, if I recorded something that is two patterns long, I can simply chain two patterns, press play and play the sound live. The recorded will be automatically "distributed" on both patterns and clean. So you can then really use the entire 8 seconds that you have per shot.

What bothers me a bit, is that the microphone sometimes seems a bit too sensitive and the recordings quickly "noise", but maybe just because of the algorithm that synthesizes the recording. Here you just have to play around with the volume, distance to the device and the pronunciation or use the linein.

A second small minus point is that unfortunately I only have two Voices (a Drum Voice and a "Synth" Voice), whereas the Po-32/33 have 4 Voices each. However, I can well imagine that two synth voices would sound muddy quickly and it would probably just overwhelm the 40 MHz processor.

All in all, I'm very happy with the calculator and am happy to use it in my setup :)
